I'm new to El Paso and I've been kinda disappointed so far. Any suggestions?

The Great American Land and Cattle Company. That place has the best steak I have every had at any restaurant. 7600 Alabama (915-751-5300). Definately worth it.

El Paso has great mexican food if you're mexican but I can only stomach menudo and chihuahua burgers for so long. I prefer the kind of mexican food you find at Lupe Tortillas. Basically I was asking for suggestions so I woulnd't have to try every piece of crap place in town. And finally I don't think a real Texan can honestly say that El Paso has "the best" anything in Texas, unless...are you're into cheap mexican hookers?

What side of town? Jaxon's is decent (and good brew), Kern Place Market

Yes the Medical School is going to happen and there's a big new hospital going up on the east side.

Thanks, I forgot about The State Line. I'll have to try it out.
The El Paso med school is in the works but FAR from a sure thing. The politicians have approved it but have yet to commit the funds for the project. Its going to be a multi-million dollar deal and I think some folks are wondering why we should invest that much of the tax payers money into an institution providing medical care to a patient population that will include a huge group of non-US citizens. I hope that is an issue that more people will make note of. The situation down here is crazy. Many of them cross over just to have their baby, and abra-cadabra, you have a brand new US citizen.

La Hacienda is closed. Ardovino's Crossing (Mecca Lounge) is a very cool place and you won't even know you're still in EP. Though it's actually in Anapra/Sunland Park but right across the river. It is hard to think of non-Mex places to eat... The med school got a another commitment just yesterday and now that Hispanics are the majority minority it will happen. The opportunities for research are great and there's no better place...

I understand that the hispanic population is booming. That is bound to happen when 19 year olds come in to give birth to their 4th child. (Apparently thats not all that uncommon in some parts of the hispanic community.)
The critical question is whether or not we should be investing millions of dollars in a facility that provides a major amount of its services to non-US citizens. And what would be the point of new research? Do we really need to conduct research to tell us that lots of hispanics have diabetes (which I gather is a bad thing). We already know how to treat it and prevent it. If you took diabetes out of the hispanic population you would cure 90% percent of their health care problems.

You think so? How about if we just pass out $100 dollar bills to Mexican nationals as the cross the border so they can pay for their health care in the private sector and save ourselves alot of trouble? I'm sure that would fit nicely into your all inclusive vision of border health.

Back to the food

Rafa's Burritos. I believe it is off of Trowbridge, down near all the refineries.

Chicos Tacos. Its not quality food , but its good. I would love to find something similar here in Dallas.

There is a place on the south side of I-10 near Yarborough, believe it is called Julio's.

So what's everyone's opinions in living in EP (economy, quality of life, etc.)?

From what I see, the high points are that the size of the city means that you will make as much or more than you would make in mid-sized cities in Texas (Lubbock, Waco, etc.), cheap nanny care, cheap cost of living, and Ruidoso only a couple of hours away.

The downsides seem to be the lack of anything green, poverty, and illegals.

Chico's Taco's, Chope's, Avilas, The Hacienda, Charcoaler, Casa Jurado, Little Diner.

Casa Jurado on Cincinnatti sucks now that Henry Jurado(an aggie, no less) sold the place.

Charcoaler is a must eat. The mexican food is pretty good wherever you go. Try chicos tacos, but go to the one on Chelsea/Montana.

Economic prospects in El Paso are grim. Trust me on this one.

I know that the overall economic prospects of EP arent all that great overall, but what I am wondering is if I would rather make $110,000 a year in a big city or $85,000.00 in EP.

the cost of living isn't that much cheaper in el paso. The housing and land may be cheaper in some areas, but the nice areas aren't dirt cheap either. $25,000 is a lot of money to give up.

Has anyone eaten at Leo's lately. They used to have some of the best mex food in El Paso. However, its been years since I've visited my hometown.

Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is the probable reason why so few engage in it.

Is Senor Griggs(sp)still there? Used to be 2 of them I think. This was in the late 80's early 90's.

First place I saw those jumbo sopapillas.

There used to be some steak house 15 or so miles east of EP that wasn't bad either.

Chico's is probably the best local resturaunt, it's the only one I know that Mexicans cross the border to go eat at.

If you visit EP you have to eat at the Cattleman's (especially at sunset), Great American Land & Cattle Co. has the best rib eye sandwiches. There's an awesome italian place located at five points, can't remember the name.

As for cost of living, EP is probably the lowest in the country and there is no state income tax. You could probably buy 4 bedroom house in decent neighborhood for 100K. Keep in mind that property values don't change very much.

Italian Kitchen and they're getting ready to build one on the Westside. Cappetto's you could have been thinking of too (he's an ol Ag). Both are near Five Points. Someone asked about Leo's earlier and yes it's the same- whole plate plus ice tea and sopapillas for like $6. Don't forget Lucy's (either one) though it's always nice to be right next to the X.

Edward Davis (Cappetto's owner) is an A&M grad, but he's more of a UTEP booster than an A&M supporter. You should have seen him cry when A&M stole Gillespie. I wanted to ask him why he didn't attend UTEP.
