It looks to be south of Marathon. Could be around the 02 flats area (South of Alpine). Some of the shots they show aren't from the same area. They are all in the Big Bend region but a ways apart from eachother.

Looks like the Christmas mountains to me.

The 02 Ranch is listed in the credits.

Burdizzo ... Thanks for the link. The list of Experts in the production is impressive and it appears the producers are trying for some semblance of historical accuracy and I applaud them for that. But I still have problems with everything appearing too modern.

But of course my feelings for how just hardscrabble the lives of those early settlers must have been in that area in those times ... no one would want to watch as a movie. This was supposedly 1867 in the remotest spot in Texas, several days journey from any source of resupply of even what those folks considered necessities. It just boggles my mind that anyone could endure such hardships and survive ... even eventually prosper.

So I just put my mind in neutral in regard to the technicalities and enjoy the series. At least, reading between the lines, it is a good testamonial to the character, toughness and resourcefulness of those early day settlers.

I find these shows fascinating too, but I tend to agree. They seem to cast these shows with drama in mind (Maura) instead of finding people who are serious about portraying the real life back them. Frontier House and Colonial House had similar issues where the personality conflicts were the core of the broadcast. I expect better from PBS, but all-in-all still entertaining.

my grandad told me when he was 18, his dad bought some land about 120 miles from where they were from, he loaded up a wagon, a team of mules, a plow and took him over to the new place and told him to get to work and left him....

he said he was there for about two weeks before anyone ever came to check on him, he didn't really know where he was, but he had flour in the wagon for making biscuits and he would shoot a rabbit during the day for some meat to eat, and he would sleep under the wagon with a mosquito net at night time....

he told me "boy, enjoy your education, here's how I got my education"...followed by the story

pb- neat that you got the "other" education from someone like your granddad.

As far as 1867,to put that date into perspective, Ft. Concho around which San Angelo grew into, was established in 1867. And it was considered the western edge of civilized Texas at the time. And Alpine is 240 miles further SW of there.

I did living history at Ft. Concho and from my studies, times were harsh for the soldiers. Even harsher for civilians.

As far as the show, I have surfed across it a couple times, but I just can't seem to get into it.

I am familiar with the Alpine area, but I don't know about the 02 Ranch. Where is it and who owns it?

I was flipping between channels and missed it. Did anyone see what happened between Jared and Mr. Cooke in relation to the pay for the horse? Sounds like Jared left pretty disgruntled.

Jared took silver for payment, then I think he threw that away and just stole the horse he rode out on.

It is 30 miles south of Alpine and 12 or 15 miles due west, best I remember. I talked to those silly people about sending some electricians to the site to make some repairs. It turned out to be a power company issue.
