Our Aero401 (senior rocket design) class is looking for a better launch site this year. Currently we have a launch site but it has restrictions on our max altitude (3000 ft) because of FAA regulations.

Our professor told us we are free to look for a better launch site where we can launch to 5,000 - 10,000 ft. Basically we are looking for a big ranch out in the middle of nowhere (preferably west texas, maybe east of Junction off of I10 somewhere) where we can launch from. We would really like to launch a HUGE rocket with a GIANT engine that goes up pretty high. We will be demonstrating a new valve for the rocket that will hopefully work. Also we will be experimenting with "green" parts that are environmentally friendly and can replace current common rocket components.

As for the launch details:
We will need to use the launch site only for a couple of days towards the end of the spring semester (around March 2008). We will spend this semester designing the rocket and the spring semester building and then launching it. All the ground testing (engine, parachute, etc) will be done on a different facility. You are welcome to bring family/friends to our launch day to enjoy the show. The rocket will have a parachute recovery system (your land will not be litered with random parts). Also, we are willing to have the name of your ranch/company on our rocket somewhere. We can take pictures, frame & sign it, and you can hang it somewhere.

On a side note, we are also looking for additional funding. The school has given us a small budget to work with. There is not a whole lot we can offer to people who donate, but we are willing to put your name/logo on our rocket and also give you a framed & signed picture that you could hang in your business. Of course you would be invited to our launch as well.

If you own a ranch, know of someone that does, would like to make a donation, or are interesteded in helping us in any other way please reply. If you have any questions about the project, feel free to ask.

A group called the LDRS (Large Dangerous Rocket Society) does this sort of thing all the time. And there is a group near me

POTROCS

Who apparently fly every month. They have FAA waivers for flights up to 50,000 feet AGL.

And if you can't figure out where I am, Canyon is for Canyon, Texas, just south of Amarillo. The launch site is about 30 miles from Canyon (nearest town of any size), and about an 8-9 hour drive from College Station.

If you bring a big group, you might see if your prof could work a deal to let you stay in the dorms at WTAMU.
