I just spent a couple of days in the RGV and I saw a couple of things I was curious about.

1. What excatly is adult day care and why are there so many of them around the area? In all my travels I don't ever recall seeing this before but it they seem to be everywhere around the RGV.

2. Do any of the towns up and down 83 have a town center or town square or anything like that?

1. I asked the same thing when I was here. Since the RGV is the poorest area in Texas and one of the poorest areas in the country, these are places where old people can be cared for and it qualifies for government medicaid care.

2. Edinburg does

If you notice, there aren't many "retirement homes" in the area.

Adult day care centers are places old folks can go an be entertained and have other people their age to do activities. Usually they have vans to pick them up and take them home. It gives the folks who take care of them a little free time to get some stuff done.

I am surprised that you haven't seen these elsewhere because the are very common, not just in the valley. I think the numbers have increased, just like the "at-home health care" because the government helps with the financing (Social Security, etc.)

As you know, when the government starts pumping money into something, there is always a boom in that kind of program, but not just in the valley. You'll probably find pages of these kinds of businesses in in the phone book in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.

"2. Do any of the towns up and down 83 have a town center or town square or anything like that?"

I don't think so. The one in Edinburg is the only one that I can recall. It is a tradition in Mexican cities to have a Plaza, and Reynosa and Camargo both have plazas - probably some of the others. Plazas are a little different in that they are more of a social place rather than governmental, (courthouse, etc.).

1. adult day care is a way for the locals to siphon money from the government which is why this whole are is full of democrats. any reason for them to not have real jobs.

2. there are no town squares. never have been except for the one mentioned above. this area is neither fully mexican or fully american. it's valley. an entirely different culture.
