I hadn't thought of the old Cactus Drive-In in years. Before I was in school, which is eons ago (1950), my family went to the drive-in every friday night. My mom would pop popcorn and we would share cokes. It was always a double feature with cowboy shows like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and Hopalong Cassidy. We would stop at the A&W Rootbeer stand in Pharr and get some rootbeer on the way home. Little guys like me got a special very small mug for free.
Later, when I was in high school, the drive-in was the date of choice because you could double date and only pay a dollar for everyone. The Palms Drive-In was real popular then. I am pretty sure that it sat on the current location of Milam Elementary in McAllen. Those were good days.
The discussion of the various activities that went on at drive-ins might be a good topic for another day! :-)
