Some places you might try:

1. Lone Star Barbeque - My favorite. Almost all the things on the menu are good except the fried catfish. Tuesday is Fajita Taco day and they actually know how to make Mexican rice - amazing! Ask for Jesse. Get there early.

2. KoKo's on North 10th - Pretty good place, owners are friends. Get there early.

3. El Patos - Fairly inexpensive and the food is OK. Used to be one of my favorites but I think they are going downhill. Owners moved to Dallas. There are several of them.

4. Olive Garden on N. 10th - Soup and Salad is good. Get there early.

5. Double Daves Pizza - Pretty good pizza place and they have a fair buffet.

Stay away from the most buffets and cafeterias. Lubys and the Chinese buffets are way overpriced and the food is always cold and stale. If you want canned food, warm up your own in the microwave.

There are several other places that are good but they are mainly are dinner places, they are kinda slow and are expensive.

North McAllen:
Go to El Molcajete on Dove. Its between 10th and 23rd on South side of Dove. On the corner of Dove and 16th (i think). Order the Taquito Combo. Try the brick red salsa on everything...it is greatness....

Mid to South McAllen:
Go to Jessies on 10th. Its just north of old 83 on West side of 10th. Yellow sign with Jessies in black. Get a table in Paco's section...best waiter ever. Order the Caldo de Marisco or the Fajita Tacos or just about anything else...The place doesnt look like much, but everytime I am back in McAllen, I always go back...

The Republic of the Rio Grande? What type of food do they have. Looking for some local flavor and not a chain restaurant.

Some of the places mentioned are in the area where McAllen and Edinburg merge.

If you are looking in Edinburg and you like fish, you might try La Jaiba about three block west of the courthouse on the south side of 107. On friday order their special called "the sailor". You won't be dissapointed. Go early or you won't find a parking place, inside or out.

If you can catch a day when they have marinated the fajitas correctly, La Mexicana is very good. Unfortunately the food is good one time and terrible the next two times. A Botana might be a good gamble, they also have Modelo!

You guys might think I like to eat, and you would be right!!

Tried El Molcajete this evening on your recommendation. It was pretty good! Our waiter spoke absolutely no English but the menu was in English so my wife and I were fine. (Reminded me of Martini's in Houston where the waitresses spoke only German and wore Liderhosen(sp?).

Thanks, I will add El Molcajete to my short list.

deadealee - You don't generally find botanas and sombreros outside the valley. I have often wondered why.

Does Pepe's on the River serve lunch? That's a great spot to check out if you've never been before. I ate there last night. Beware they close at 7 on weeknights thanks to their 90% winter texan customer base.
