El cucuy or La Llorona - as a kid growing up in South Texas? For me it was La Llorona becuase she was supposedly raped and killed in a creek behind our neighborhood.
It didn't help that the stupid stay cats would have sex in the creek and the sound they made sounded like someone getting strangled!
