Because if we had on September 18th, people would complain about

it being the day the North Vietnamese Army began invading South Vietnam in '64, which we all know led to the VietnamWar or
more importantly, it being the anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga: American Civil War.

Then again, we could have had it on the last Thursday, September 25th and celebrated the birthdays of Barbara Walters and Will Smith.
