I'm in the Harlingen area on and off for the next few weeks. What are some good local places to eat? Anything interesting to do here?

Well I'm from the other end of the RGV so not sure about the local spots to eat. I know they have a good amount of the chain spots along the Expressway.

There is the Valley Race Park (greyhound races) and the Outlet Stores just down the road in Mercedes. SPI is about 45 from little H-town. Not sure about the local bar scene. Good luck sure you can get some local input once you make your way to the RGV.

Las Vegas Cafe

i am a chef in college station from harligen so let me start. i will go by meal.

Breakfast:
Alicias Cafe - best breakfast tacos
Mi Rancho - open 24hrs, breakfast tacos
any Stripes - all the stripes gas stations now serve authentic mexican tacos (the cooks are mexican too).

Lunch:
El Zarape Taqueria - great combos, the closest to mexican taquitos of beef and chicken.
China Star on Ed Carey - A hole in the wall restuarant. best chinese and sushi.
Pesos Bills - get the buffet it has great food and salad and is all you need.

(in the mall at the food court there is a great little restaurat will all kinds of home made food. i do not recall the name but check it out)



Lunch or Dinner: "Elegant" Mexican Food
Los Asados - My Favorite enchiladas
Big Johns BBQ - the cows they cook are out back
Azumas - Tempanyaki and Sushi and Hibachi
Creasey's Bowl - has great burgers and beer

those are all the "non chain" great places i can throw off the top of my head. whenever i go home these are usually the only places i eat at. let me know if you would like some other information.

if you have a passport, it is a 20 minute drive to Mexico and the food and alcohol prices are well worth the drive.

You forgot Lone Star on old 83 and Pepe's on Sunshine Strip. Both are very good imo.

I do not have a passport but I heard you can get by with a driver's license and a birth certificate. Does anyone know that will work? AND does the birth certificate have to be an original or can it just be a copy?

you can usually get by with just a driver's liscense but I haven't been to Progresso in awhile.

that should work, but if you want to play it safe, walk over to the border agents before you cross and get their ok first.

there's not much to do in harlingen...baloo's? other than that, head east or west. food wise, you can do alot worse than harlingen. el pato, longhorn (maybe this is actually san benny?), capital city burger, etc are some that haven't been mentioned...and i agree with several above.

Smokey Joe - BBQ and burgers are good

La Playa - Fried shrimp stuffed Avocado with queso topping.
