I live in San Antonio and when I use to travel to the Valley for business a few years ago I would go to Progresso on a fairly regular basis.

My question is.... is Progresso safe? I hear the news that everyone hears and I was just curious what the truth is. A friend and I want to make the trip down sometime this summer.

From everything I've heard, shopping in the daytime in the usual tourist areas along the border is still perfectly safe. It's clubbing in Reynosa at night that my friends won't do anymore.

That is really sad. When seniors in high school, we had a tab at Dutchs Bar in Reynosa. Did some serious drinking there and never feared a bit. Times have changed for the worse.

No it is not safe, there are armed bandidos on horseback galloping up and down the streets engaging gringo's in random gunfire. Just last week it was reported that there was an invasion attempt on Progreso Lakes, but they were thwarted by DHS.

Oh man, I remember Duchess bar, first time I ever had a flaming Dr. Pepper. Anyone remember Eddie's? Serious good times, even if I don't remember half of them. Times have changed and not for the better.

I'm planning on going over when I'm in harlingen next month. Last time we ate at a place on the 3rd floor above a liquor store, anybody know the name of the place. We also had beers at some makeshift bar on the side of a building. Pretty f-ing cool.
