I am an '07 Grad and am in town with my girlfriend who is interested in the Phd program in Epidemiology at UTB. Just asking for any recommendations you guys might have for a nice place to eat.

Also, if you guys know of any decent neighborhoods in town that might have rental properties for $1500 or so that would be safe for a young family, I would like to go take a look at them as well.

Try the Vermillion on Bocachica Blvd, it is just east of the BC/83 intersection. Off the freeway exit BocaChica go back under it towards the east and make your first immediate left, you should see it on your left. It is my favorite place to eat in the RGV. Also, Elva's Mexican food, there are several of them now.

If you got a passport go to Matamoros, yes I believe it is safe, try any of these places:
-La Troje
-Mocambo (right next to the new bridge, ask a local to explain the old, new and los tomates bridge thing to you)
-Garcias
-Bigo's

You might look in north brownsville there are several nice areas.

I lived in Rancho Viejo and my rent was under what you are targeting. You could rent a really nice place long term in PI/SPI for around a grand a month.

Just drive around some.

I would definitely live on SPI if you have that kind of budget - Brownsville is only 20~ mins away.
