Authorities are searching for drug smugglers who used tire spikes to escape from Border Patrol agents but abandoned almost $1million dollars worth of marijuana.
Border Patrol agents told Action 4 News that the incident happened near the rural Hidalgo County community of Los Ebanos on Wednesday evening.
Investigators said Border Patrol agents spotted a white Ford Explorer leaving the Rio Grande at a high rate of speed.
Border Patrol agents tried to intercept but their tires went flat.
Backup units were able to locate the abandoned SUV on a ranch.
Border Patrol agents found 120 bundles of marijuana worth about $1 million dollars inside.
Drug smugglers have started using road spikes to discourage law enforcement officials.
Anyone with information about their manufacture or sale is asked to call the Hidalgo County
