A Weslaco mother is facing criminal charges after she allegedly got drunk and left her 1-year-old son in the car while she slept inside their apartment.
Weslaco police and firefighters were called to the Northgate Apartments at 1800 North Texas Boulevard around 9:40 a.m. Sunday.
A witness told police that he was parking next to a car when he saw movement in the backseat of a Chevrolet Lumina.
Despite the morning hours, temperatures had already started to climb outdoors and inside the car.
Rescuers broke the car window and found the 1-year-old boy strapped in a baby carrier, sweating profusely and with shallow breathing patterns.
Paramedics rushed the boy to the Knapp Medical Center where he was stabilized.
Investigators said the baby carrier was not anchored to the car’s seatbelts.
Police went to the apartment where the baby boy lived but nobody answered the door.
Police entered the home through a window and woke up the boy’s 20-year-old mother Crystal Dale Ramirez.
The Weslaco woman told police she went out drinking beer at a home in Mercedes on Saturday night.
Ramirez claims she returned home while it was still dark around 5 or 6 a.m. Sunday morning.
The 20-year-old allegedly told police that she thought she had left her son with a babysitter.
Ramirez appeared before a Weslaco Municipal Judge on Monday morning where she received a $15,000 dollar bond for a child endangerment charge.
