I am expecting problems between family members regarding a will. A proficient lawyer wrote a will that has been filed but I foresee problems since that lawyer is no longer available.

Anyone have a recommendation of a good lawyer that specializes in wills and probate? I know a lot of lawyers around town but I just don't know what kind of law they practice.

LeeAnn Hewitt, her office is in San Benito, but that is her specialty. Handled some stuff for me along those lines. She used to practice with Atlas & Hall in McAllen before going out on her own. Real good woman, quirky and odd, but honest, decent and affordable. Also a good friend.

Katie Klein has a "Bulldog" reputation in more ways than one. I was told once not to even think about calling her unless winning was your first and only goal.

Interesting about Katy. I know her but didn't know her specialty.

Katie Klien is tough woman and a good attorney to have on your side. She wears the scalp of many a man of the RGV. I thought her specialty was D-I-V-O-R-C-E.

Another decent and good guy Aggie attorney is Dave Casares, I think he also specializes in divorce.

I recommended LeAnn because I know and trust her and she is not a billing machine at all. Hence, living and working out in the country in San Benito.

Interestingly, she was one of the victims of the crooked judge Limas, a case she had before him where she and a co-attorney got rooked was one of the ones that brought him down.

Actually, I guess you probably do know her. Isn't (or wasn't?) she married to one of the former theater/speech teachers at McHi?

Little bitty guy IIRC.

Further, I think his homeroom was right across the hall from my fav business teacher...the one that wrote all my absence excuses.....

Yeah. She was married to Stanley Klein who was the debate coach back in the early 80s. Lots kids that went through schools that I worked at back in the day I just don't know what they specialize in. The fact is that many kids(?) in McAllen have spent time in my office... :-)

Jones, Galligan, Key & Lozano in Weslaco does a good job. Larger firm with several departments. Matthew Jones does a lot of business law and prepared my will.

Another vote for LeAnn Hewitt. I am an attorney and practiced in the valley for many years, and LeAnn did my will. She is an excellent attorney, honest, ethical and affordable. As RGV said, she comes across a little 'odd' but don't let that hold you back. She will do a great job.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was really looking for someone in McAllen or Edinburg not down the valley though.

Rat:

If you so choose, give her a shout anyway and talk to her. She gets up to McAllen frequently and it has been my experience that quite a bit of legal stuff gets done via email and scans and stuff nowadays.

Plus, if you do end up down there it will give you a reason to try the Vermillion, you will love it.

One other thought, if you have to have someone in McAllen, give Greg Turley a call. I think he does some probate stuff, but I could be mistaken. He handled a lawsuit for me when all my attorney "buddies" and such including LeAnn, ran for the hills. Well LeAnn gave me really good advice and help, but she could not handle it for me due to a conflict of interest. But Greg did a real good job and is a good guy.
