Mrs OVR and I went to the show yesterday afternoon at the CarMike 20 in Edinburg. We go on Tuesday afternoon because the tickets are $5 and the refreshments are $1.50. (Its a weekday and there are usually a lot less people at the show.)

We were shocked to find out that 3 of the shows were sold out (showing it on 6 different screens). Many school age kids were there (how did they get out of school.) In fact there were 3 school buses in the parking lot (1-Weslaco, 2-Edinburg).

Not many of us old retired folks there. Mostly just kids and young adults. I am really surprised that so many school aged kids and young folks that should have a job were there. Employers must be a lot more lax these days for so many people to be out of work for a movie.

After all that, the show was a waste of time. Sure had been looking forward to it. I was a fan of these characters back in the comic book days.

Living in McAllen, it does feel like that they entire valley ISDs take the month of May off. I know when I was a stay at home dad you could count May out as park time because of the hordes of school buses showing up from parts unknown.

This is a function of these tests that the kids takimg every year. The schools/teachers/kids have learned that they will be judged on the basis of the scores on STAAR (used to be TAKS). They work exhaustively on geting the best scores on the tests and one of the tricks is that if the kids try real hard, they will get trips to the movies, parties etc. If they don't do this a fair number of kids will blow them off.

Not saying its right but facts are facts. Basically the school year gets shortened by about a month because the most important thing they do (STAAR) is in April. After that they are just waiting for the results of the test to determine if they scored OK.
