I'm traveling up for the Rice game and I'm leaving from McAllen. It's been a while since I've made a straight shot to CS. Any routes that would be suggested that are better than Google Maps? Any reasons why I should take that route over others? Thanks and Gig'em.

North on 281 up until you hit the 410 loop, exit. Take it till you hit i35 (approximate 15 minutes) then get off on exit 205 (hwy 21 exit) follow that until you hit 47. It's about 400 miles. Takes me anywhere from 5:10 to 5:30 hours.

North up 281. 59 east. 37 north. 1604 North. 10 east. 304 North. 71 east. 21 north. 47 to college station.

That has the most divided highway and the only part you really need caution is 304 north which is just past the Bucees in Luling and spits you out in bastrop.

Thats a 2 lane with a few curves but never saw a cop on that road in my years of using that route.

Try 130 down to Seguin on i10. $6 toll, 85 mph limit.

I tend to run up 281 to an FM (Chilpitin Creek Rd)north of Alice, turn right for about 5 miles to 359. Then 359 through Skidmore and Tynan to 181 into Beeville, then onto 59 to Goliad and Alt. 77. Then Alt. 77 all the way to La Grange and then onto 159/237 through Round Top and onto 290 to Burton, and then 390 through Gay Hill and onto 36 through Somerville and then left of 60 through Snook and into CS.

This was the fastest way for a long time, don't know about now with all the new toll roads and such. But I will tell you this, it is the prettiest way and the least cops way. I have made it from McAllen to CS in right at 5 hours several times.

It is just the way I go due to habit.

I second the RGV route. It is a very pretty drive, particularly the drive from Burton through Gay Hill. I used that route when I was going to A&M because of the speed and the lack of cops but there weren't all the pretty farms back then that make the drive so scenic today.

After playing around on google maps I am convinced there are 10 or 20 different routes that all are within 10 minutes of each other.

I like sticking to the interstates as much as possible because I like setting my cruise on 78 mph and feel it's a little bit safer.

130 is fun because you get to drive 85 but with the feral hogs running around I seriously doubt it's any safer than the back roads.

Google maps says 369 miles for RGV Ag's route. 73.8 mph average speed will get you there in 5 hours flat. Google suggests it takes 6 hours 26 minutes.

Their default route takes 6 hours 11 minutes, 384 miles and takes you over to 77 at Falfurrias and then 77 to 21 just north of Giddings.

My route (281 to I37 then over to Seguin on I10 and up to Mustang Ridge on 130 (toll road) then 21 on in to College Station) is 6 hours 12 minutes, 408 miles.

And now I know that google doesn't like the 59 bypass of George West and Three Rivers. Adds 7 miles and 3 or 4 minutes.

That is too funny and too cool. Yep, it was 378 miles door to door from my parents house to my long time place in CS. I could make it in right at 5 hours if I only stopped once for a peepee break.

Back in the 80's when there was still 55 MPH speed limits the cut across route to 359 and then on up was much faster due to there being no cops on the road. There is another route that takes you through Bastrop that was pretty fast.

All I knew is that the route that took you through Giddings was 30-40 min slower than going the way I did. There is much more traffic on the Beeville, La Grange stretch now than there once was, but it is much prettier that the other routes and especially in the Spring. I also used to travel at night quite a bit and on those country roads there was hardly any traffic late.

Yep I remember when seeing 3 or 4 DPS before Alice was a big deal.
