There's a guy down here that's about 50 now that's the longest hitter I've ever seen. He used a 5 iron from the tips on #10 (back when it was #1) at MCC and was a foot short of the green.

Ridiculous.

I'm happy with 250 on the fairway.

my winning drive was 355, into a 8-10 MPH wind. they jacked up the prices to $40 per attempt (6 balls), so i only hit one set. i hit around 5:00 because i thought they were shutting the event off at 6:00. i almost got "winded" because they allowed hitting until 7:15 and the wind had died down to 1-2 MPH. there were several guys hitting 3-4 sets of balls. a couple guys hit it 350 late in the day, so i just hung on. i am confident that i could have hit it 375+ if i decided to hit with the calm wind conditions. my long drive club is an Alpha 830-2 on a Harrison Long Drive Shaft (XXX-stiff). the shaft was about 2.25" longer than normal when i got it, but i have cut it down to maybe 1" or 1.25" longer than a normal shaft. i hit a Ping G5 as a play driver. i am pleased with my performance Sunday, as I had not really hit my Alpha in a couple months and I was a little banged up and stiff from a bad hangover. i'd say i was swinging in the 142-144 MPH range; i was clocked at 154 MPH last summer. anything in the upper 140's will give me a legitimate shot at winning in Nevada, i believe. i got 5 balls in at 355, 351, 348, 347, and 339.... there were about 25 guys who hit before me and my 5 drives would have been 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 7th. the wind was pretty brutal, so i was pleased.

339? Is that all?
You need to work on that one!

Here's an update...
Yesterday at MCC, my daughter, who plays about 3 holes during a round but never more than 4 total, shot 53 on the front. Keep in mind that she took a par on #2 because the hole was "closed". Look at these scores hole by hole...
1 - 7
2 - 3
3 - 8
4 - 6
5 - 6
6 - 6
7 - 5 *** #1 handicap hole. I almost cried!
8 - 7
9 - 5
It was a great day in Gurm land.

i hit the 339 a little high for being into the wind.

that's awesome about your daughter. looks like she needed a couple holes to warm up; after that, it kept getting better. how old is she? i keep trying to get my wife to play. she took lessons in junior high and has an impressive swing (she finishes very nice). she hits a 7 iron about 120 with a nice little draw when she goes to the range with me. if your daughter enjoys the game, it is fairly easy to get a scholarship.

That's great Gurm. I think I got a 50 on the front yesterday at MCC.

Holy crap #10 screwed me. I hit a nice drive right down the middle (smoking line drive - would've been near the green) and it hit the back lip of the canal somehow. It shot like 60 yards directly right towards 14 or whatever that par 3 is.

I've been taking my 6 year-old out to the par 3 course by our house. He plays 6 or 7 holes and calls it a day. He loves it. Watching him get the ball out of the cup (he has to balance on one foot and kick the other one up in the air) is pure greatness.

Update...
Yesterday at MCC my 13 year old daughter shot 118. That was the first time she had ever played 18 holes. She had only played 9 holes once. She shot 58 - 60. She got tired on the back and topped several balls and missed several putts.
However, she made a par 5 on #6 and a bogey 5 on #7.
And...teeing of with a 5 wood, she was 30 yards from the green on #9.

Hey what time did you tee off Gurm? We played through a twosome fitting that description at the turn. We teed off a little after 4.

You guys play too much! Don't you have jobs?

That's funny that it was her first full 18 holes. If that was her she looked frustrated already and she shot an amazing 118. I hope she sticks with it. Great start.
GurmTsu
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's funny and frustrating!
She struts around after a good shot but will fall to ground and pout after a bad one...but...she does enjoy it for the most part. I don't push her very hard because I want it to be her idea to play. I think if I can teach her how to plant her right foot and point her left foot out while taking the ball out of the hole she would begin to enjoy it more. As you say, That would be greatness! ha ha.

update: i won the Pinnacle Exceptional Driver qualifier at The Woodlands today. it came down to the wire as i missed the grid with my 1st ball, but then decided to play a high-percentage low cut into the left-to-right, slightly into wind. i got the remaining four balls in the grid and won it by a point on my last ball. i completely soaked my shoes (standing water from thunderstorm), but i am pleased nonetheless.

Congrats, again!
...but...can you putt? ha ha.
Well, she beat me on #6 yesterday. She two-putted for par while I three-putted for bogey. She teed off with a 5-wood and landed on the back side of the fairway bunker...ended up pretty close to the palm tree on the right. Then hit the 5-wood again and was pin high off the left side, chipped up 2-putted...beat Dad. What a smile I got. I can't tell if it was "Sorry" or "Kiss My Butt".

Then, I was in deep trouble on #7 but made a fifty five foot bogey putt to tie her.

any news on your daughter's golf this week? i am itching to get to the golf course; haven't touched a club since Sunday (when my Alpha driver snapped).
GurmTsu
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No update yet. She is talking about going to the driving range tonight with her mom...in SA. She said she'll call me if she has any questions.
After we played Sunday, she was not happy with the way she hit the ball so we got 4 buckets of balls and spent an hour and a half on the range...all her idea! That was the first time she ever wanted to do that.

What did you do to snap your driver?
PJYoung

That's excellent Gurm!

Where do you plan on playing when MCC shuts down? I think we'll be hitting 7 Oaks some. I despise crowds on the golf course.

LOL, I'll also keep playing the Par 3 three or four times a week. My chipping has really improved. I've gotten it under par on the front 9 twice in the past week but then end up blowing it on the last few holes. Such a freaking mental game.

it just snapped on impact; i wasn't even swinging that hard. i've had it about a year, so it's not unexpected. i have broken faces of drivers but never snapped one before (just a 2 iron). oh well, it should not be too expensive to fix and i am in the process of picking up sponsorship from Alpha and possibly Cobra.

I snapped a driver once...but I think my knee probably had more to do with it than club head speed...Congratulations on the sponsors!
All this power and length yet you insist on playing from the ladies tees at Tierra Santa...LOL

PJ, I think I'll be playing at Palmview quite a bit. I like the layout. Also, I'll spend some time at Tierra Santa and the island.

Today 2:30 MCC.
Too bad Summer began Wednesday. Now it's gonna be hot.

Gurm, I played Palmview Sunday. The greens sucked and the regulars were extremely slow and obnoxious.
GurmTsu

Los Lagos this afternoon. Any comments? Anyone play it lately?
PJYoung

So how was it? My brother-in-law played it yesterday and said it was nice and cheap as well. $22 summer rate.

He also raved about 7 Seven Oaks. $16 and greens were in great shape and the course was still empty.
GurmTsu
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It wasn't too bad. I shot 75 but that's only because I hit the fairway. If you don't hit the fairway, you run the risk of having the ball roll and roll and roll until you it's O.B.
The greens were OK...not great...but ok.
I'm going to Palmview Thursday. It should be in better shape. It usually is.

We played the back 9 at SPI yesterday. We didn't have a tee time and halfway expected to only be able to practice on the range.

Holy crap that place is expensive. $59 weekend and holiday rate. Whoa.

46. I'll take it considering it's very easy to lose a ball there. Beautiful greens. They were in excellent condition.

PJ,
i thought it was a little cheaper if you tell them you live in the Valley. i played SPI the day of the A&M/Clemson game last year.... i had a great round but all i remember is the drunken agony of the A&M loss.

i shot 71-74 at the 2 Blackhorse courses over the weekend.
GurmTsu
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Nice! I didn't know it was that much at SPI either.
Good weekend at Blackhorse pa02.
I was at Corpus Christi CC and shot 74 - 81.
Sunday sukt but Saturday, I was putting lights out. I scrambled for 34 on the back Saturday...couldn't make chit Sunday.
PJYoung

Yea the guy said it's cheaper if you own property on the island and cheaper still if you're a year-round resident.

I played four rounds Sunday at the local par 3. Greens were soft from the rain and I figured I could finally break par. Birdie on 1 followed by 16 straight pars had it looking good. I shanked my tee shot on 18 and carded a triple for a +2 total. Niiiiiice. Followed that up with a 1 over but I was still pissed at blowing that.

It's such a mental game. I would much rather not know my score when flirting with a personal low.
proudaggie02

you gotta take the positive and think about what you are doing well, while working on your trouble area(s). there are some positives to take from your round, in that (1)you played well enought to (2)have an opportunity to hit your goal by breaking par.

i agree that golf is VERY much a mental game. i have numerous examples of this; here are a couple:

- i don't play well with my father-in-law; i play very well with my dad. the best i had played the first 4 holes at Blackhorse North with my "f-i-l" was 2 over (in 5 rounds); i played them 3 under with my dad in the group this past weekend.

- i shanked my 8 iron on a particular hole the first 3 times i played it.... i had never shanked anything other than a 3 iron or SW before.

just keep working at it. you become a better golfer by putting yourself in pressure situations, even if you stumble at first. just my 2 cents; i hope it provided a little insight.

sounds like shanking an 8 iron into your f-i-l might solve a few problems...lol

Palmview today with my daughter, my brother and 2 friends...noonish.

I was in the zone.

Played again last night and went +3.

Pouring right now. Looks like it'll stop in 10 minutes or so. If it doesn't flood the course I'll play again at around 7.
GurmTsu
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm gonna try to get out to Palmview tomorrow about 1:00. Not set in stone yet but it looks like a possibility.
GurmTsu
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Man, those greens at Palmview were SLOW yesterday! The course is in very good shape and the greens are coming around after the aerification a few weeks ago...but dang...
It took me 9 holes to finally get a putt to the hole. By that time I was just trying to hit it hard and wasn't able to keep my line. I had 36 putts for 18 holes and shot 81.
I hit 11 of 14 fairways.
I hit 12 of 18 greens.
