Son is playing baseball for UT Tyler, will be in several weekends with time to kill.

Would appreciate suggestions for things to do, places to eat, and nearby day trips to kill time.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Hit the Boulders resort, down university and right on FM 848. Basically RV Place , but beautiful area , you can walk the area, also food trucks , and he built a fantastic dining area that he was just going to have food trucks back in and serve. He has covered, baited fishing barge where I have seen huge stringers of crappie. Kayak and board rentals, also has some cool cabins for rent- kind of pricey- but no riff raff around. We just go without rv on weekends and launch our own kayaks and hang out. Google the Boulders at Lake Tyler. Good luck!!
Also on 848 before you get there, looks like TPWD is building something of interest in reserve area.

Breakfast - The Diner on South Broadway or The Four Way Cafe in Flint on the Old Jacksonville Hwy.
Burgers - Kamo's Kajun Grill It is in Gresham in front of Bella's - see below.
Italian - Bella on the Old Jacksonville Hwy. It's family owned. My wife and I think it's fantastic. The sea bass is amazing, but I think it's just a special from time to time. It's BYOB.
Texas Music City Grill is good - a wide variety of choices. Brisket Tacos, Texas Twinkies,
Javy's - good TexMex. Good prices with an upscale feel.
Mama's - two locations, one on South Broadway, another by TJC - home style TexMex - very good breakfast. A lot of food for the price.
Mercado's, Posado's, Papacitos, Jalapeno Tree - all standard TexMex. If I have to chose one, it's Mercado's.

For eating, those are my choices, but I know others will come and offer contrasting opinions.

Things to do - in the sping the azaleas will be pretty. Drive the azalea trail just south of downtown - there will be bright yellow signs.
If you like zoos, Caldwell Zoo is nice to visit.
I've never been to the freshwater fish hatchery in Athens, but I've heard it is interesting.
The New London School Museum is very touching. www.nlsd.net/Museum.htm
I like history, so the East Texas Oil Museum is interesting to me, too. It's in Kilgore.

That's what I can give you off the top of my head.

If you got an hour to kill, come give blood at the blood center and you'll get a $20 gift certificate to Uber eats. Save ya some money for a meal and takes up some time.

If you like craft beer we have two breweries in town worth visiting, True Vine and ETX. Both have food, ETX is more bar food and True Vine has Sola Bread which is pizza. ETX has pool tables, tvs, and stuff. True Vine has a lot of outdoor seating, playground, dog park, stage for live music.

Stanley's is the best BBQ you can get in town.

I like Jucy's burgers.

Bruno's has a couple of locations and is pretty good pizza.

1836 and Villa Montez similar restaurants with good food, higher prices.

As far as stuff to do, quite a few lakes within reasonable driving distance. Trails, golf courses, Times Square (movies, bowling, arcade, etc.), Cherokee Drive through Safari, Discovery Science Place is cool for younger kids.

Another easy/quick afternoon time kill is the museum at Brookhill School. The primary founder of the private school is an avid collector of American history artifacts, most of which have to do with American wars. You can go through it in an hour or two, it's not too expensive and you'll see and learn some cool stuff.

Things to do:
- Hiking/Biking at Tyler State Park. Not anything crazy, but the best you will find in east texas
- Rose Garden
- Lots of good golf if you are in to that (Cascades, Hollytree, Eagles Point)

Food (other than what has been mentioned):
- The Grove (great place to eat and chill for a while)
- Don Juans (Almost real Mexican)
- El Lugar (real Mexican)
- Posados or Mercados (Tex-Mex staples)

But lets forget about all that and talk baseball!! lol
- who is your son and where are y'all from?
- how did you get recruited by UT Tyler?
- What made y'all choose that school?

I have a son looking to play college baseball so I like to pick peoples brains in regards to baseball and recruiting. If you would rather not, thats fine.

Getting ready to head back to Tyler for the first time since opening weekend.

The Patriots started 1-2 against #1 ranked Angelo State. Were outscored 26-4 but snuck out a 2-1 win where ASU left 17 runners on base (that's baseball).

Had a lunch at Stanley's that was fabulous and a breakfast at The Diner that was really good (went to Mama's another time that we liked). Took our dog to a couple dog parks we enjoyed and hit True Vine Brewery. Will probably hit ETX Brewing or a winery this weekend along with some Mexican food.

Since opening weekend the Patriots have won 6 in a row, are ranked #11, and face a ranked West Texas A&M team.

Thanks again for all the good suggestions and hope everyone survived the freeze!!!!
