So I am spending a few weeks at Driscoll Children's Hospital doing my pediatrics rotation. Anyone got any good recommendations about places to eat around town, preferably near Staples St. and S. Alameda?

We went to Snoopy's and it sucked hard, so hopefully something better than that place!

Like greek food and have some time to waste? The Torch on Alameda past the HEB at Roberts, before Airline, just before Windsor Park Elementary, by the Gill's Nursery (I assume it is still there) and the JR Viola Cleaners. If you were coming from the hospital, just turn right onto Alameda from the hospital and look on the right after the light at Roberts. It is just past the antique shops.

(Is the Ancient Mariner still there across the street from The Torch?)

I love Doc's, it is by Snoopy's under the JFK causeway. In my opinion, it is better than Water Street. I like the food better, the price and menu are comparable, and the atmosphere is 1000Xs better because you are on the Laguna.

I wonder what happened at Snoopy's, I never had a bad experience in my years upon years of eating there.

I enjoy the counter at Hamlin Pharmacy. It is in Hamlin Center at the corner of Staples and Weber/Doddridge. Pretty close to the hospital.

I never remember the restaurants downtown as they seem to change hands regularly, but the Surf Club is always great for a beer, some food, and music.

Luciano's Italian Restaurant‎ at Six Points is good. From the hospital, turn left onto Alameda (toward downtown) and look on the left before you hit Staples at Six Points. I believe the cross street is Clifford.

Yardarm is a pretty good small restaurant, though be sure to check as they may be closed for vacation! It is on Ocean at Roberts, just across the street from the cemetery.

Silverado Smokehouse is great too! It is on Weber, just past Gollihar. From the hospital, turn right, then right on Doddridge. It is on the left in the shopping center just past Gollihar. (If you are new to CC, remember that Doddridge turns into Weber at Staples and noone knows why)

And a pretty good Mexican restaurant in the area (and everywhere in CC) is Jalisco's. I think the nearest one is on Staples, just past Doddridge next to the Oh, Gosh!

My favorite mexican restaurant in that area is Recio's. I assume it is still there. It is on Alameda on the other side of Texas Trail from the hospital.

At Doddridge and Alameda, there is a shopping center where the post office use to be, on the same side of Alameda as the Exxon. There is a deli shop in there called Small Planet (I assume it is still there). It is good.

Sometimes on the katty-corner is a cajun restaurant. Use to be the Country Cajun then they left, the it was someone else, then I don't know if it is even there now.

This is kind of fun! As you can tell, I grew up in this area, just a few neighborhoods over. Went to Ray so we knew all the good food joints in the area. Sadly, all the good ones closed. RIP: Elva's, Angelo's, Jalisco's behind the Luby's (which also closed), Belair Pharmacy...

Mao Tai is the best Chinese food. It's on Alameda by HEB.

thanks for the help!

Snoopy's was just too bland, I got the shrimp and rice and it was just too little flavor and excessive amounts of rice.

Thai Cottage is phenomenal Thai food, by the way. It is the same restaurant as the ones in Houston, and it was great to see that they had a location here in Corpus. Hit up the red curry if you get a chance.

Did Mao Tai move? I thought it was on SPID?

Still on SPID. Best cashew chicken I've had in a long time.

I like Taquiera Acapulco too - (La Playa is good, but there's better) - it's on Airline across from Panjo's pizza and Toys R us, I think. The only complaint I have about them is the parking.

ocean, the exact same restaurant is also just down the street at Airline and McArdle in the Gulfway shopping center across from Cavendars. I have no idea why they build them like a block apart.

McArdle, that's the street I couldn't think of. Thanks. I don't know why they do it either.

Good ol UT-Houston peds month in Corpus - those were the days!

Low patient load, free food from cafeteria (loading up even to take back to condo), getting let go early on call night by nice FMG resident, and trying to find the perfect eateries/entertainment establishments . . . good times.

Hua Tai is the place on Alameda down the street from Driscoll Hospital. The other place is out on SPID.

Also in that area and open for breakfast and lunch is Boatners on Ayers and Santa Fe.

breakfast has reminded me of one of my favorite breakfasts in Corpus, second to mexican, is Town and Country. It is in the Town and Country shopping center at Alameda and Roberts. You get to rub elbows with all the local business men over you coffee and biscuits and gravy.

Mao Tai is a chinese restaurant that has been out on SPID for at least the last 28 years.

Most of us drive past it several times a week.

Price's Chef and Hester's Cafe at Six Points (intersection of Alameda, Staples, and Ayers). Price's Chef is diner food and Hester's is more of a cafe/deli restaurant.

If you have time (night/weekend/day off) Padre Island Burger Company is pretty good.

My favorite Corpus places to eat everytime I go. For BBQ Mac's BBQ hands down over off ALameda near the HEB on Roberts.

Mexican, Taqueria Alcapalco on Arline across from Toys R us. Great and cheap, order the carne Asada by the pound, amazing.

Water street and Surf club are always favorites. Best salad dress, house walnut dressing.

Oh and Whataburger, always good to get it from where it originated.

Boat N Net? Now that is quality seafood right there.

Name one place where you can hit a cowbell in a wooden box and yell your order into a PVC pipe?(other than the BnN on the corner of Staples and Everhardt - I think that is the right location.)
