Like greek food and have some time to waste? The Torch on Alameda past the HEB at Roberts, before Airline, just before Windsor Park Elementary, by the Gill's Nursery (I assume it is still there) and the JR Viola Cleaners. If you were coming from the hospital, just turn right onto Alameda from the hospital and look on the right after the light at Roberts. It is just past the antique shops.
(Is the Ancient Mariner still there across the street from The Torch?)
I love Doc's, it is by Snoopy's under the JFK causeway. In my opinion, it is better than Water Street. I like the food better, the price and menu are comparable, and the atmosphere is 1000Xs better because you are on the Laguna.
I wonder what happened at Snoopy's, I never had a bad experience in my years upon years of eating there.
I enjoy the counter at Hamlin Pharmacy. It is in Hamlin Center at the corner of Staples and Weber/Doddridge. Pretty close to the hospital.
I never remember the restaurants downtown as they seem to change hands regularly, but the Surf Club is always great for a beer, some food, and music.
Luciano's Italian Restaurant at Six Points is good. From the hospital, turn left onto Alameda (toward downtown) and look on the left before you hit Staples at Six Points. I believe the cross street is Clifford.
Yardarm is a pretty good small restaurant, though be sure to check as they may be closed for vacation! It is on Ocean at Roberts, just across the street from the cemetery.
Silverado Smokehouse is great too! It is on Weber, just past Gollihar. From the hospital, turn right, then right on Doddridge. It is on the left in the shopping center just past Gollihar. (If you are new to CC, remember that Doddridge turns into Weber at Staples and noone knows why)
And a pretty good Mexican restaurant in the area (and everywhere in CC) is Jalisco's. I think the nearest one is on Staples, just past Doddridge next to the Oh, Gosh!
My favorite mexican restaurant in that area is Recio's. I assume it is still there. It is on Alameda on the other side of Texas Trail from the hospital.
At Doddridge and Alameda, there is a shopping center where the post office use to be, on the same side of Alameda as the Exxon. There is a deli shop in there called Small Planet (I assume it is still there). It is good.
Sometimes on the katty-corner is a cajun restaurant. Use to be the Country Cajun then they left, the it was someone else, then I don't know if it is even there now.
This is kind of fun! As you can tell, I grew up in this area, just a few neighborhoods over. Went to Ray so we knew all the good food joints in the area. Sadly, all the good ones closed. RIP: Elva's, Angelo's, Jalisco's behind the Luby's (which also closed), Belair Pharmacy...
