Looking for any advice re: places to tell him to avoid or go to, cheap food, etc. I'm from Beaumont and have been to the island quite a bit over my life and know some things which I have told him, but any further insight would be appreciated.

Being a recent grad, here's the best advice: Don't have sex with townies.

Current student here... there's nothing to worry about, this town is full of kittens. Just tell him to lock his doors and stay off the seawall during tourist season unless he likes traffic. They'll pretty much be gone by the time he gets here anyway.

Queens BBQ is the best in town. The Spot (burgers on seawall) is worth the hype and wait. Casey's and Guido's is not. The Dutch Kettle is awesome diner style breakfast, far better than IHOP, Denny's or Waffle House. I agree with the previous poster about the bars in town.

Skateboards are a really popular way to get around campus, there are some good skate shops in town. I think I saw a bulletin on campus last week about a skateboard for sale.

What major is he? Has he register yet? I could make some Prof recommendations.

And if you're like the rest of the parents who have students at TAMUG, don't worry about hurricanes... the school takes care of the students.

edit; If you/he ain't from a small town, beware the size of the school. I doesn't take long to realize that everyone knows everyone at TAMUG... rumors, both good and bad, get around really really quickly.

Thanks Brick. He has already registered, marine science major. Hurricanes are no worry. I've been through more than I can remember. Audrey, Alicia, Bonnie, Rita, Humberto, Ike. He's been through 2 or so.

NO it is not. Leon's on Broadway and 55th is the best BBQ on the island. Queens is sub par, I've been meaning to clear this up for some time.

Shrimp n stuff (39th and O) is good for a quick fried seafood meal.

We enjoy eating at Salsas, but we're being told over and over that Los Patrones is damn good. Most college kids enjoy El Gusto because they'll serve minors.

Float bar is a great bar, so is the Spot tiki bar, but they're not so much college spots.

McInnis be tellin the truf. The only thing worth getting at queens is the bbq baked potato. I heart Leon's chicken.

I like Salsa's too. Killer green sauce. Never heard of this Patrones place, might have to give it a try. Too bad Marco's isn't around anymore for the minors. They would serve us in our BHS baseball uniforms. Good Times.

And death to whoever said Gaido's isn't good.

I didn't say they weren't good, I said they aren't worth the wait nor hype.

Agree.

Leo's (not Leon's) is not technically BBQ but I like their meat too.

Leo's and Leon's are two different places right? One is BBQ one is a cajun style smoke house... which is where I go for my ham hocks and tasso for soups and gumbo

That's correct. Leon's is the BBQ place around 55th & Broadway and Leo's is the cajun place around 32nd & Broadway.

Last time I paid attention down there, strip club(s) in the Strand wear pasties...make the trip to the causeway, it's worth it.

I don't remember if it was in the Strand "proper", but it was down there in an old building with cobblestone streets somewhere...it was awhile ago.

Leon's BBQ is the best BBQ in town.

Leo's Cajun Corner has great chicken gumbo.

The Original Mexican is the best Mexican food.

The Spot and Salsa's are good happy hour locations.

Shrimp N Stuff probably has the cheapest fried seafood on the island.

If you don't feel like sending your presumably 18 year old kid into a bar to buy pizza, send him to Papa's Pizza (no relation to the Papa's chain in Houston) at 45th and Seawall. Not to mention Murphy's has the scariest looking bouncer in town, who IDs... he won't get in after dark.

and since I mentioned making Prof recs... I'm not a science major so I don't know many of the folks he'll be seeing. As a freshmen, the main guy he wants to look for is Lawhon, he teaches history and is a seriously cool guy. I'd avoid Dr. Ryan, who also teaches history... he's one of those guys who seems to be trying to "weed" out the students. If he needs to take econ, look for Boudreaux (sp?).

Thanks all for the replies. BTHOB4T12 where is The Original Mexican and Leo's Cajun Corner?

Brick, just curious, what is your class year? And, thanks for the info you've provided.

Original Mexican - Corner of 14th street & Market St.

Leos Cajun Corner - On corner of 32nd and Broadway (southside of the street)

Original is okay. I never liked it much, but my mom does. After many years I finally figured out a few decent things to order. The best mexican in my opinion is Mi Abuelitas on 45 and O 1/2. Best tortillas in the world, seriously.

I gave Salsa's three chances and finally scratched it for good. The atmoshere is okay, but I have been dissappointed in the food everytime.

BBQ - Leon's and Queens are good enough. I never eat BBQ out because do my own BBQ. I cater small events if anyone ever needs help. Sorry for the plug.

Best pizza - Mario's. They also have a good lunch buffet. The rest of the menu is great, but can get expensive. Can't go wrong with a fair priced meatball sandwich or chicken/eggplant parmesan sando either.

Breakfast Burritos - For some reason the rest of Texas hasn't figured out how to perfect this art. You won't find a better burrito than what Galveston offers. Everyone else in Texas makes breakfast tacos. Down here we put everything in the burrito - eggs, bacon, potatos, beans, and cheese (chorizo too if you go with the Bronco). You can't go wrong at any of these places.

Mi Abuelitas
El Jardin
La Estacion
The Donut Shop - known for the bronco

Also for breakfast burritos, Los Compas on 45th and R?

I think that's right... definatly on 45th... So is Mi Abuelitas, cross street is around M.

I'm a junior, but I'm a non-traditional student... I'm a bit older than most.

I always forget about Los Compas. I used to eat there often before I moved off the island. Good stuff. Try their burger sometime. One of the best in town.

Regarding Patrones, I haven't been but my brother has and he said it was good.

Love Leon's - it is the best.

We haven't been to the island since January, and had heard Leon's wasn't going to reopen. I hope all this talk means what we heard was wrong.

Rudy & Paco's downtown is really, really good, but not on a college student's budget - maybe mom & dad can have dinner there when they are in for a visit.

Also, The Stork Club - right across from Rudy & Paco's is a good place for drinks and the food there looks really good - we've just stopped in for drinks, though. It seemed like a local, neighborhood kind of bar/diner.

Leon's was delcious this Sunday. Something sweet (besides the onions) in the pintos. Good jalapeno sausage and tater salad.

He is quite the left-ist... pretty easy class though, and I'm pretty sure you can't avoid him. I think he's the only guy who teaches US Gov.

Leon's - BBQ
La Estacion - Breakfast Burrito (cheap)
Murphy's - Pizza
Mosquito Cafe - Best brunch on the island and possibly the state
Saltwater Grill - better than Gaidos
Casey's - Gaidos menu but cheaper.
The Spot - hometown version of Fuddruckers (watch out for the bikers)
Olympia - awesome Greek food (Gyro platter is huge)

Still haven't been able to find great Mexican food.

Mario's on 61st was always my favorite pizza place down there. Good for a pitcher of beer and some pizza. Plus they deliver to the dorms, which was bad on my wallet my sophomore year.
