My girlfriend was accepted to UTMB's PA program, and is looking for places to live.

Any of y'all have suggestions of what to look at or avoid?

Congrats to your girl. My mom went through the PA program at UTMB. She still works there in the GI dept.

There is plenty of decent housing near UTMB. Most of the apartments are older, but the clientele is mainly students so it is safe for the most part. Being close to UTMB is convenient, but you will find out quickly that you can get around the island pretty easily from anywhere.

The Dawn apartments on 69th & Seawall are really nice.

Also, a friend of my mother has two rental units on the first floor of her house. Each one has it's own kitchen, bath, etc. Her mother lives in one and the other unit will be available soon. It is centrally located and just a few blocks from the beach. I think she is asking $450 plus bills.

You don't want to live anywhere north of broadway from 25th St to 61st St. With some exceptions, most places near the seawall and west of 61st are good to go. The historical district is close UTMB. You might find a nice garage apartment or a small complex in that area.

I lived at Newport at Campeche Cove on the west end. It's on the opposite end of the island from UTMB but like he said, you can get around pretty easily. My girlfriend lives at the Broadwater Apartments which is right around the corner from Walmart around 61st and seawall.

Thanks y'all. I appreciate the info.

Fairway, more than likely my girlfriend will get to know your mom. She's currently looking into (and liking) the idea of renting a garage apartment at one of the houses in the historical district.

Are you moving with her?

Man, I just poked my head onto this board and saw this thread. I spent two years of my life on that rock putting my ex-wife through that PA program, seeing your post brought back a lot of memories.

That was a rough two years for sure. Good luck to both of you.

I've been going to UTMB for the past 2 years, and lived in both a garage apartment and tiny house in the historic district. Both were better options than many of the apartment complexes. The only apartments I liked were to far from UTMB to bike/walk.

Sorry, for the late reply.

Nope, won't be moving in with her. Support her, yes, put her through it, no. Not really an option right now.

ktag06 - Yeah, that's what she's decided to do, too. She's found a place that's soemthing like 0.8mi from the PA building. I've only seen pictures, but it looks good so far.

As a female, I would be nervous about living in Galveston alone. She should look into getting a roommate. Just my opinion though... lots of single girls do live here alone.

I live alone in the Silk Stocking historic district and have never had any problems. I do have a dog though, which helps with my peace of mind.
