Is it possible to bike from TAMUG to the seawall? Are there bike lanes?

The short is yes, it is possible. To answer your other question, no there are not any bike lanes.

However crossing the bridge there are signs that you can light up that will flash and alert car drivers a biker is on the bridge. Other than that I would recommend taking 53rd St. towards Seawall. It is very wide and as safe as you can get without riding alond Broadway too far. (45th would be another decent opttion)

I did it a couple times when I was in school there and never seemed to have any problems with that route. Good luck and enjoy the beach.

I've thought about riding to class, but crossing that bridge seems pretty treacherous. People haul ass across the bridge. And with the construction on campus and the far end of pelican island, there seem to be plenty of big trucks crossing. The riding through town part doesn't cause concern, it's just the bridge IMO.

Thanks for the responses!

More questions:

Would there be a reason for a student to have a bike at TAMUG if they weren't planning on riding it over the bridge into town?

How do students get into town if they do not have a car?

Are you, or is someone you know coming to TAMUG this summer/fall?

Folks do ride their bikes around campus some... occasionally people go for rides down to the far end of Pelican Island. If you (a student), or a friend have a truck to take your bikes to the seawall, there is plenty of riding to do there.

I know several people without cars. There are usually plenty of people who are willing to give rides to and from the main island or even the mainland. It works like this, tell your roommate and suite mates and a few other people that you need to go to the grocery store/wal-mart and by the end of the week someone will be take you.

There is also Island Transit. Which is local, public transportation. As I understand it, they make a couple of trips a day to and from campus.

It certainly can be done.

The sailing coach at TAMUG makes his daily trip from his home on the main island, to the TAMUG campus, then to to Teichman Campus (near 45/hardborside exit) then back home. The most hazardous part would be crossing from the main island to Pelican Island. The bridge is not that friendly to bikers and has no bike lane and drivers who frequently ignore speed limits.

IsleAg...Thanks for all the good info! My son will be at TAMUG in the fall and will be living on campus. He decided he could do without a vehicle (for an extra $100 a month from me) but was thinking he would take a bike to ride into town. Even though it sounds like he may not want to ride it into town, it may still be good to have. I'll guess I'll leave it up to him. I'd really like to get more info from you if you have the time. Thanks!

He definitely needs his bike to cruise the seawall. He will more than likely make friends with someone that can get him across the bridge.

Kristin, a bike may be something he really doesn't need. I graduated from TAMUG and lived on campus for 4 years, and saw very few students who rode bikes. He should be able to get into and out of town for shopping or whatever if he gets some friends with cars. In the start of fall when it is 95 degrees and 90% humidity, i doubt he will be that motivated to ride to the seawall or the main island unless he is a glutton for punishment. It would be a sure way to avoid the freshman 15 though.

What major is he?

It is an island tradition for 18-24 year old boys to cruise the beach and check out all the ships. The real question is low handlebars or high handlebars. I prefer the high ones. Much easier on the back.

Of course not. She sighed, smiled, and rolled her eyes. He knew he wasn't fooling anybody, but he was too much of a gentleman.

guess I need to trade in the road bikes for beach cruisers huh?

Nah keep the roadies. You gotta have the right equipment for each situation.

I still ride my mountain bike on the wall for exercise. You don't want to be pulling up to the float on that though. The cruiser is all about state of mind... flojo y tranquilo.

If you have a road bike and are into riding you can navigate from one end of the island to the other--about 60 miles round trip. Not all of it is bike friendly but if you don't go on a major weekend it isn't too bad.

Fairway Ag needs to get on the golf course and practice. I heard from someone that knows you quite well that your game sucks and you couldn't hit a fairway if your life depended on it.

Ouch... maybe he spends too much time paying attention to the beverage cart ship?

Damn! Let me get up and dust myself off.

I don't even have a comeback. Right now I couldn't sniff the 70's if I had a coonhound's nose.

So may I ask where this person that knows me lives? I can probably figure out who he is if I know that much. Denver, New Orleans, or Dallas?

agrams...Thanks for the info! He has not declared a major yet, but is interested in anthropology. He got waitlisted at TAMU, so instead of waiting until May for a decision, he just decided to go to TAMUG for a year and then do a change of curriculum to main campus. I'm kinda hoping he likes it at TAMUG and decides to stay all 4 years though.

IsleAg...when I think of more questions I'll post them...thanks!
