My boss was in Galveston last weekend, and took some photos of a number of woodcarvings that had been done in front of a bunch of homes. Apparently they were trees that were destroyed during Ike.

A long shot, but anyone know who did these? There's one of a dog standing with its front paws on a fence. One of a squirrel. An angel, I think. Some birds. All very impressive.

You didn't happen to pick up a copy of the local magazine "The Islander" did you? I think the guy who does the carvings advertises in there. I'll run out front and see if I have a copy of the magazine. If I remember correctly, there are two guys doing them... one is much better than the other.

The one copy of The Islander we had out front has an article about an artist who has some of his carvings in her studio. His name is James Phillips. There is no contact info for him but I'm sure if you contact Rene Wiley's studio she'll get you in contact with him. You can contact her at 409-750-9077.

Here's a link with pics of carvings by him, and other artists. http://creativesculpture.com/blog/2010/05/here-is-some-wonderful-galveston-art-created-from-devastation.html

He has some really awesome blue crab carvings, as well as a Tarpon. If I weren't a broke college kid I'd be all about that stuff.

Texags karma! Pay it forward.

I do get a lot of help from texags so I'm happy to help.

May I ask what you're having done? Do you have a tree in your yard that needs carving? I'd love to see pics. Being the good ag you are, I'm sure you're having Reveille carved out of a stump in the yard, right?
