We will be in Port Aransas this weekend (me, wife, two boys). Is it safe to go in the water? I have heard that it is stingray season.

How bad is it if one gets stung? And how do you treat it?

Thanks in advance!

Was down there a few weeks ago and didn't see any. I have an uncle that was hit by one a few years ago in the Atlantic and it was the most painful thing he'd ever experienced and I think it nearly killed him. Don't know though if they're the same species. Good thing to keep in mind is to always always shuffle your feet when you're walking, even if you can see the bottom cause they'll bury themselves with loose sand.

Also if you're worried call the local hospital and ask if they've treated anybody or heard any reports. The local ER will always be one of the first to know.

Enjoy the water, and have fun!

Had a friend who just stepped on one recently. They went to the ER for it.
Just be careful and shuffle your feet when walking in the water!

Now, I'm torn. We are driving about five hours just to go to the beach, but then we have a family wedding on Saturday. How common/rare is it to come in contact with one? Do they sting through water shoes or would the shoes help at all?

Thanks guys!

I have 4 kids and we go to the Port A/Mustang Island beach quite often without any incidents, knock on wood. don't think the rays like the crashing surf very much.

dont be torn. The surf is safe, the bay is not. If you are on the island, at a beach, you are good. If you are worried shuffle your feet or only go were other people are.
