Did you know that Corpus had a song? I mean, besides the classic "I'm from Corpus, Corpus Christi" or if you hate the haters, "That's not how you represent the 361."
Turns out Ada Wilson wrote one.
You know her, she built the children's clinic and the castle at Doddridge and Ocean. Crazy, rich lady.
Murphy Givens wrote an article a while back that one of my friends just shared on Facebook. Ada Wilson had a towering ego and a great heart. Interesting article about the lady, but one line stood out, "Ada wrote a short story and several musical compositions, including the city's official song."
City's official song? Now at Windsor Park, we did a unit on the history of Corpus. We had awesome slide shows, went to heritage park. We learned that the Ada Wilson house had a tunnel under Ocean Drive (notice the structure on the bay side of Ocean in front of the house?). I earned the Scout Corpus Christi Historical Trail patch (real thing, here's a pic of my badge). I went to every game of the Barracuda's in 1994 season and have a pennant hanging in my basement. But somehow I didn't know about this song.
I asked a buddy of mine from Calallen and he too hadn't heard of it, but a google search found the name was "Come to Corpus Christi."
I wrote Mr. Givens. He said someone else had found it at the library. I contacted them and they provided the lyrics. I share these with you.
The library also sent lyrics to a 1915 song called Corpus Christi by W.J. Hartz. I've never heard of him.
They sent sheet music, but only the odd pages... If you happen to be at the main library...
