I remember getting Boy Scout items at Cox's upstairs, over by where one went to get gift wrapping. You rode the escalator up on the west side of the store to where you got gift wrapping.

When did Cox's close? It crossed my mind how I remembered it as a kid today.

I believe Cox's closed in the late 90s.

no, more like early to mid 90s...Peter Piper opened in 1997 and the building had been vacant a while.

I remember moving to Waco in 1978 and thinking how nice it was there was NO traffic...not any more!

* V.M. Cox's obit said Cox's Westview location closed in 1995

Some spots that haven't made the list:

Youngbloods Chicken - a REAL restaurant that featured fried chicken. Had lunch there on Sundays if we were good in church. Somewhere on Franklin I think.

Bertrands - Great breakfasts on special weekends like Father's Day. Mr. Bertrand was a local admissions assistant for A&M and West Point. I never would have gotten in WP if not for him.

B&B Sporting Goods - Got my first REAL football helmet and shoulder pads for pee-wee football.

Gibson's on Franklin where the boat shop is now. They had EVERYTHING.

Cogdell's Sporting Goods (Hardware store?) on Valley Mills near New Road. Had a lot of hardware that my Dad would pick up to fix things around the house. I always headed to the sporting goods area to see the rifles, knives, and especially the stuffed bear. Man my memory tells me that thing was at least 12 feet tall!

Getting my first Whataburger on New Road between Bosque and Valley Mills where a smoke shop is now. Still has the traditional A-frame roof.

Knowing we were really headed fishing when we stopped for minnows at the gas station/convenience store/bait shop at Hillcrest and Lake Air. I always preferred looking at the worms!

Exploring the storm drain underneath the Lake Air Mall on bicycle. I imagine that led a few Ags to explore the steam tunnels at Aggieland.

How about Leslie's Chicken Shack on Old Dallas Highway in Lacy Lakeview? One of our Sunday spots for lunch as a kid

Bo, they have completely torn down Leslie's finally! I drove by the spot last week and thought, where did it go and realized it's been probably three years and that is long enough to tear down and remove trash.

My kids LOVED the round sink they had in the entrance/exit to wash your hands in!

Mom,

A couple of years ago, the Chicken Shack sign was still around and being stored in a junk yard around the "Business 77" exit (Taylor Street) off of I-35. This was one of the routes we would take to get out of Waco and onto 6 (Bus 77) to head to Aggieland before Loop 340 was built all the way to 6/Bus 77. The other route we would take to get out of the Lake Air area was La Salle.

CCAD, now that you mentioned it I have seen the sign there(as you said) for many years but the building was still standing.

There was an article in the Tribulation about the old building on Austin...it was Hamilton furniture I think I remember. The store had the cage elevators and we went upstairs to look at bedroom furniture. The JCPenney's two story varieties with wooden staircases had an aroma that only old buildings had. Bygone times.....

I remember downtown before the tornado.

And when shopping meant driving to Waco before the interstate one old Waco road. We thought the interstate would never be finished and it looks like we were right.

Cox's and Cinderella shoes--downtown. I had very narrow feet growing up and they could fit me.

Also the old red goose shoe store had a machine that xrayed your feet to show how the shoes fit.

Another era.

I got Red Goose shoes in Houston for the same reason! I got out of corrective shoes about age 6 and my doctor suggested Red Goose oxfords and approved patent leather shoes for dress up. My Mom said my first corrective shoes were $7 and the orthotist put a formed insole and a wedge sewn into the outsole for $2.50! At Christmas in 5th grade my black patent shoes were size 8 AAAA!

When I was older, my sister wore Poll Parrot shoes and they always gave a surprise with each purchase.

This thread must be working on me. I had a dream last night that Leslie's Chicken Shack re-opened on the highway.
