Anyone have any advice on how to get to Abilene the quickest? I checked google maps and it is sending us through Austin then up through cedar park and up that direction. Anyone have any advice on areas we need to stay out of or a faster way?

You could take 6 all the way through Waco, jump on 281 at Hico, and then jump on a highway that goes west to I-20 in Stephenville. I would imagine that wouldn't be a terrible drive.

6 to Waco, Hwy 84 to Gatesville, Hwy 36 to Abilene.

Or, 6 to I-20.

Oh, I've taken 183 at Rising Star to I-20 at Cisco, then to Abilene. It's a little longer, but more interstate.

And I concur with EMY, 6 to I-20 ain't bad.

Watch the speed west of I-35 on 36, 6, and 84. They WILL get you out there!
