Does anyone know why Tom Barfield isn't on 1660 anymore?

No idea, but the new guy apparently has never listened to the show before....acts like he has no idea about who his two cohosts are....

I do like that he, Smoak, does a good job of bringing in some big names and people from across the state as opposed to the regular Baylor crowd, and also like the way he regularly solicits more phone calls than the old show did...

Smoak has a good reputation. Maybe it will upgrade the show.

So glad to see Tom go. He was horrible. Was always wrong about happenings in sports and his job was sports.

Paul does a good job and he and Smoats work well together. I like Butch, but it is time to retire. He can't keep up with Smoat and Paul.

The new owners said that they will start to offer internet coverage again so we can listen at work.

although I can't say that I agree with much of what you said....Smoak would do well to keep up with some of the traditions they have had on the show such as the trivia, fun fridays, banter with the KXXV sports department, etc...

barfield is a joke, listening to him call any game is horrible, and him leaving will only help 1660.

it's time for butch to go as well, the afternoon show is/was a joke. they should have just played what espn radion has on during that time frame, and john morris' show is dead as well.

Why would he do that? What's the point of that? Obviously they were trying to change it up.

I follow sports heavily and get my sports info form a variety of sources. I never relied on the local guys on 1660 to give me the latest info...however, I will miss the afternoon show. I found them comical and entertaining. They always butchered stories...almost like they reported watercooler talk. They would report just about anything they heard..whether it was accurate or not. I really like listening to the regular callers that call in. They are most often ridiculous and not very well informed. I like to think of it as a sports radio soap opera. The John Morris show is great if you are having trouble falling asleep. Nice guy...but what a boring sob! I also find the spin through the green and gold glasses to be highly amusing as well.

most days you wouldn't realize it's even sports talk radio considering their polls on favorite sandwiches, etc......

Of course every once in awhile they'd get a caller mention it and would respond with "well if you don't like it change the dial".... not how you get listeners

Listening to the John Morris show is like getting a root canal. The guy literally has no sense of humor or anything. Unbelievable his lack of emotion or insight.

I can listen to just about anyone on ESPN's networks except johnnybob morris....

Makes me want to shove ice picks into my ears...

If you think those guys are bad, then catch the Robert Cessna show in CSTX sometime.

I listen to 1660 sometimes. The afternoon show can be entertaining and sometimes really stupid.

Cessna is just not meant for radio. His delivery is slow and misses a lot.

it is good though having someone who actually sounds like they know what they're talking about. Smoak will find that Waco sucks and move on. Dude belongs in bigger market sports talk.

Tom and Butch were the epitome of Waco. Backwoods, but sadly, that sold there in Waco. Nothing better than talking about the Bosqueville JV Football team whenever I just gotten out of range of real sports stations. Butch and his Little League coaching prowess needs to go.

Smoak will stick around for a bit, but will realize that John Morris is a goof-ball moron and want to hang himself.

Either is still better than the "I don't know crap about sports but because I'm a Fallon my daddys local legacy will carry me" from when they used to have the morning show

The handful of times I actually tried to make myself listen to this show, I felt like driving my car into a light pole. I have never heard a worse show in my life. Horrid. Absolutely awful.

I'm not sure what time this show is on, but if you are Ags in Central Texas, you can probably catch 1150 AM out of College Station. Louie Belina does a fantastic job talking A&M sports and is now on 2-4 and while Chip Howard is not much better than the show referenced here, you get quite a bit of A&M and Big 12 talk. He is on 4-6.

Anyone who can listen to the 1660 show, should receive an award or something.

Ha. I think you and I have discussed the show on a couple of occassions in the past. Truth be known, that is actually the reason I attempted to listen to it, but man, it is just not for me. To me it sounded like some old, senile fools you might find in a 50-year old barbershop downtown talking about small-time sports that I had no interest in.

It is definitely an acquired taste. It is more "entertainment" at times than sports. I only listen to about 30 minutes an afternoon, and there are days I switch over to the Austin station for Chip Brown or Doug Gottlieb depending on which show they have playing.

Haven't heard much of Smoak yet but seems to be pretty ligit. Just needs to incorporate himself into central Texas a bit since most of his knowledge appears to be east Texas.

1660 - They only way I can listen to the Rangers at work.. Thats all it is good for.

Thank goodness they are making changes at 1660, although, in an odd way I'll miss that trio. It will be interesting to see how Smoak interacts with Butch and Paul through the longterml. Right now it is kind of wierd because you've got Smoak (who sounds like an actual professional sports talk guy), Paul (who has pretty good knowledge, but isn't made for radio, IMO), and Butch (who probably needs to hang it up, the horrible impromptu commercials get me everytime. How do you spend what seems like 5 minutes talking about Michna's?), their pesonalities are just not meshing. Oh well, it's Waco sports talk, you can't expect greatness. Btw Smoak has his own website revolving around east Texas football. I would imagine he'll start incorporating central Texas football in the mix as well. www.smoaky.com
