I was heading to DFW from Sugar Land last week and got pinched in Riesel. Officer Danny Krumnow. I was on 6 doing 75 and passing a convoy of stinky tractor trailers with chickens. When I saw the 45 mph sign, I braked to be at 45 when I got to the sign. Well, I got pulled over and was told that I was doing 76 in a 55. Apparently, I did not see the 55 mph sign because it was on the other side of the trucks I was passing. I told him what must have happened and asked for a break, but he ticketed me anyway (and was breaking stones about my NY tags and license, but nothing came of it). I was going to hire an attorney when I decided to call the courthouse. I spoke with Kristin (sp?) and she said there are 3 options:
1) I can get an attorney, but it rarely helps and I would end up with one of the below options anyhow plus my attorney fees
2) I can pay for the defensive driving course and costs, totaling around $150....the speeding ticket "goes away" but there will be a notation on my license that I took defensive driving so any officer that pulls me over for anything will see it, or
3) Pay $299 and, poof, the entire thing goes away never to be seen again
While the 3rd option seems to be a form of extortion, I like how they operate. It is business. They are out to get money, not you/me. In a "po-dunk" town (nothing wrong with that fwiw), I am sure the tax revenue is less than desirable and they keep the town alive through these speed traps/payment options. If I was a Riesel resident, I would be happy about this form of income for my town.
At the end of the day, I will opt for option #2. I was speeding and my main concern is keeping my license clean, not getting out of something I did. I'll save the $150 over option #3, and take (or pay someone to take haha) the DD course. Since my license is NY and they only run my license through NYS DMV annually, I will also submit the DD receipt to my insurance company there and get a discount on my coverage since the ticket won't show up.
It is not always wise to hire an attorney. Especially in places like Riesel. In Houston, I got out of a 88 in a 55 with a cheap ($50) attorney because there are soooooo many people that it falls through the cracks and the date was pushed back so many times the city just gave up and focused on the other million people with tickets.
Just my $0.02 here. Good luck.
