So I attended my first Battle of the Bell game last night in Cameron. It was great to see the oYe bring the Bell back home where it belongs...

Interesting to see the two teams both sharing the bell during the game, and then as soon as the clock struck zero it was wheeled over to the Cameron sideline where it was immediately painted back maroon and gray as it should be!

The Battle of the Bell is an annual football game between Cameron and Rockdale. In 1954, a railroad company donated a bell to increase the rivalry. Each year the winner of the football game goes home with the bell and paints it with their school colors.

never lost it while I was in school - 82-85 seasons. I remember the goal line stand in Rockdale in 85 - David Camp and Seth Dockery kept them out so the bell would stay home. Joe Smitherman said it best at the pep rally. You don't remember if you beat Connally, LaVega or Navasota but you always remember if you won the Bell. Go Yoe

For some damn reason we always had really poor administrators and an overactive parental contingent which kept us from keeping a good head coach. Then we'd go hire some board members friend who didn't want to be there.

You guys always seemed to do ok in the Head Coach department.

I can only hope Rockdale can keep Coach Miller for the
next few years.

My sis in law is celebrating her 50th reunion at Yoe High this weekend. There is a chance they will have one of my brother's classic cars from the era over there.

Hope they have a great weekend.

Yeah it's my Dad's 55th. He recalls how Cameron was Rockdales only defeat that year before the playoffs, and it was the first Battle of the Bell. Rockdale stole the bell after the game and threw it in the River. That's the story I have been told. Can I get independent comfirmation on this, not that I don't believe my Dad but he's a Really Good Bull@hiter.

I don't know the year, but I had always heard that as well. I did a blog post day of the game this year and took some time to do a little internet research on the history of the Battle... at least one site confirmed the bell had at one time been throw into the river, but it didn't say what year, nor by which team.

Of course, it was also a site about the history of Rockdale, so that could be why that little piece of information was left out. LOL
