Will he keep blue front/white back?

Definitely. He's already commented on how cool he thought it was, and how important Wildcat tradition is.

Blue front, white back magic
Hello Newman

They probably asked that question in the interview.

I am sure that the blue front white back pants will always be a non-negotiable, no matter how hidious they look.

I am also sure he is much more concerned with relevant factors like dressing areas, weight room, practice areas, needs at the Junior Highs, etc. than he is with traditions like silly looking uniform pants.

Here's to hoping he can return Temple to its winning ways and get the Wildcats back to making deep playoff runs.

I also hope he takes a very active role in the athletic director aspect of the position. There needs to be more guidance in the overall athletic program.

I don't think the pants are "hideous" or "silly", crusader.

Sorry you think so.

I know that when we moved to Hewitt in the late 70s, Temple had a football team to be reckoned with and somewhat feared. In a TV interview the comment was made that Temple was always "good potential" but the townsfolk supported the team 200% and that made the boys play like they couldn't be beat. Store fronts, car windows, t-shirts even brick buildings were covered with support for the Wildcats and that fostered a family feeling and mutual respect....hope that feeling comes back soon. Lots of teams and towns need that old school backing and pride.

Jan,

I'm sorry but that's the way I feel. Doesn't change my wishes for the new coach and team though...I want them to be successful and return to the winning ways of Temple Widcat football.

Mom,

Yep, you moved in during the heyday.

From 1976-1983, Temple lost 3 regular season games. That is 3 regular season games in 8 seasons. An incredible record.

Winning was expected and almost automatic. Those teams made it look easy, but it was the result of talent, great coaching. tough as nails players, and ALOT of hard work.

The '79 State Championship team was the most amazing and least expected. They returned a TOTAL of 3 starters from the previous year, lost 2 key players to injury early, and was comprised mainly of guys off the previous year's JV. the DE's were 150 pounds each, and the OL was mostly under 200 pounds. They were picked 3rd in the District. Ended up 15-0 State Champs.

Will be tough to ever come close to those years. It was a very special time for Temple football.

Oh, in the interest of full disclosure with regard to the '79 team, it didn't hurt that one of the new starters was a running back named Kenneth Davis (he had started at CB the year before as a sophomore).

We made most of the playoff games in those years. No way to get regular season tickets due to season tickets sold.

Cru - why would you be sorry for feeling that way? No need to apologize. I'm willing to bet that if they start winning, they could wear whatever color pants they want and it wouldn't be an issue. Winning cures all ills.

Spradlin received a two-year contract with an annual salary of $105,900. He takes over a Wildcats football program that has a 37-77 record with one playoff victory in the last 11 seasons.

Saw this in the paper online. I don't know what he was making at his previous school.

But with the major cuts that districts face with the new state budget, I am guessing this contract may soon be one of the higher paying jobs.

It is hard to justify paying that for coaches when towns are going to be shutting down entire schools.

I would imagine that the Asst. AD job may be cut and the OC and DC may start teaching a class or two.

I don't think the Asst. A.D. will be cut.

I could be wrong, but I just don't think so...

Mom and Captain- I've heard my whole life from Coach McQueen that is the "Way we are," about living in Temple, TX. We have gotten away from that mentality (77 losses can do that to a town). Captain, the '78 team was supposed to be the team to win state and was stacked full of college and NFL players. They lost 15-14 to Plano at Texas Stadium in the first playoff game. That game started the hatred we have for Plano.

State- I heard that one of the conditions that Battershell told the candidates was that all of the coaches, except the head coach, would have to teach a full schedule.

We were supposed to meet with Coach Spradlin today but I think mother nature had other plans. Hopefully, it will be tomorrow. I am excited for the vision he has for the high school and ready to hear what he has planned for us down at the middle school level.

Yes, the '78 team was ranked #1 the whole year and was expected to cruise to state. That team had Carl Robinson, Michael Weddington, and a bunch of other studs. But, Plano did indeed beat Temple at Texas Stadium 15-14. Kenneth Davis, a sophomore at the time, barely missed a 50 yard FG at the end.

One thing though - it was the second round of the playoffs, not first. But who's counting, right?

Met Coach Spradlin yesterday and like what he brings to the table. Out of the 65 or so people that applied, I'm very confident he was the best and right person for Temple. Very hands on, involved, and energetic. Many changes are about to happen for the good.

I met him Tuesday and really like his energy and style.

The committee did a GREAT job. I know for a fact the amount of time and research they put into it. THEY deserve a tremendous amount of thanks.
