We would like to share some information with anyone who is interested in finding a place to retire, use as a weekend home or to just get away for the weekend. My wife and I purchased a lot at Artesian Lakes in 2007 and built a log cabin to get away from the stresses of work and the big city on weekends. We are part of the Artesian Lakes community that is a little more than one hour northeast of Houston. Artesian Lakes includes a 100-acre resort (The Retreat at Artesian Lakes) with log cabins for rental to the public and a 400-acre residential community. For more information you can check out the website at www.artesianlakes.com.

The Artesian Lakes community includes approximately 100 lake-front lots. About half of the lots have been sold and half of those sold lots have homes completed already. The quality of the owners in the community is incredible. We have company executives, NASA engineers, pharmacists, teachers/professors, physicians, software creators, real estate agents, attorneys, CPAs, etc. as part of our community. The owner of the resort is also a resident. Many of the owners are from Texas, but we also have friends from Louisiana and even Montana and Puerto Rico.

The Artesian Springs-fed lakes vary in color. Our lake is clear emerald green. Fishing is unbelievable if you like to catch bass, crappie and catfish. The water is so clear that you can see many of the bass you are trying to catch. You will even see a few alligators that like to visit us from the Trinity River. Boats are allowed on the water but with electric motors only. You see lots of golf carts roaming the roads throughout the day.

The owners have access to everything the resort has to offer, including a great restaurant managed by a chef, an incredible swimming pool and hot tub enclosed in a cave of boulders, a swim lake, exercise facilities, massage services, horseback riding and some of the most beautiful nature trails you will ever see. More specific to the owners, we have a horse stable if you would like to board your horse. We also have the option to purchase shares in a certified organic garden cooperative, work in the garden (on a volunteer basis) and receive a large variety of fresh, organically-grown vegetables and fruits almost every weekend of the year. One of the lakes in the community is stocked with rainbow trout annually in December. A fly-fishing extravaganza is organized in early Spring with instruction from Orvis-certified guides giving a lot of us a chance to make fools of ourselves.

The surprising extra of owning a home at Artesian Lakes is the caliber of the community of people that you become a part of. After getting to know each other and watching each other’s houses grow from lot to finished home, we have developed many new and lasting friendships. We all regularly host happy hours, crawfish boils and Mardi Gras parties to visit with our new community friends…as well as get together on the spur of the moment for great meals at the restaurant attached to the resort.

Come on out and visit us at Artesian Lakes or take a look at the website above…we think you will be surprised that such a special place exists so close to the big city.
