On a map of Texas draw a straight line from Dallas to Houston (239 miles).
What is the tallest office building along this line from 1926 until TODAY (86 years).
Buildings in Dallas or Houston do not count.

It can most likely still claim title to the tallest between Dallas and Houston since folks in College Station Aggieland once mis-claimed their Oceanography & Meterology, or Eller Building, (built in 1972 at 15 stories).

Problem is, College Station is disqualified as ah little too far off to the west 40+ miles of the straight Dallas/Houston axis line.

Bop will give an A+ for the name, number of floors and community location of that tallest building between Dallas & Houston.

It's not the Alico building is it? I'm not sure what your parameters are.

It would be the Alico but I don't think Waco will fall within that straight line.

My Dad was born in 1917 and in between farming seasons his family took the equivalent of a vacation to Waco to see the Alico Building and the suspension bridge. In 1922(when they came here) it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River!

Take a straight edge.
Run a line from Dallas to Houston and see what you find along that line (or very close to it).

ALICO is way too far west of the line.

there is some petroleum company office built in The Woodlands that my Dad said was the tallest in the area but I can't remember the name of it.

According to this web site, yes, at one time the ALICO was the tallest building west of the Mississippi

It is 22 stories, and about 250' tall, 282' to the observation tower.

It was built in 1910, so it could be that San Francisco simply didn't have any taller buildings at the time, or whatever they had at one time got knocked over by the earthquake of 1906.

And the suspension bridge was the longest suspension bridge between New York and San Fran. It was a huge deal at the time.
