The reason Cameron dropped is because enrollment remained stagnant while other areas grew and forced the UIL to shift the enrollment brackets upwardly. Cameron isn't alone. Happens all over the state.

One example is West Orange Stark. They were winning 5A State Championships in the late 80s. 15 or so years later they were solidly 3A, where they remain today. They went from playing in 12,000 capacity stadiums to little wooden cracker boxes in only a few years. It's what happens when a school has enrollment stagnation or decline while other parts of the State are growing through the roof.

Captain Pablo hit it on the head.

Agree with EMY92 about Midway's efforts to stay 4A.

The same thing will eventually happen to Temple moving from 5A to 4A (Not probably playing in cracker boxes though). Temple's enrollment will always be around 2100 or 2200. Their enrollment will never be able to grow beyond that because of how the other school districts have surrounded TISD.

What's interesting to me is the Waco ISD situation. When they made the 5A Waco High out of 3 x 4A schools (Richfield, Waco, Jeff Moore) and left University as a 4A school, I figured Waco would be a massive 5A power forever (I think that's what they thought too).

Now, Waco HS has dropped to 4A but University remains 4A just like it's been for a long time. Like you mentioned with the districts surrounding Temple, I guess fewer people are living in the WHS part of Waco ISD because they're all moving out to China Spring, etc. I was expecting Lorena to have grown more by now.

I just noticed that Class 3A, 4A and 5A all have 32 districts and 4 regions. Some of the districts have significantly more schools than others.

The uil wants a certain number of districts and regions so that their play off tourneys work out nicely formatted. That means that districts in some divisions can be smaller than others.

Plus the way cities are always it seems building more high schools, the growth is at the top of the ladder, not with new schools that are small opening.

They seem to start at the top will filling in five a and then move down. So the enrollment for the lower divisions keeps going up.

My district IS growing, but we stay a small two A because the ceiling moves about the same rate we are growing.

I wished they filled from the bottom up, and made a 6 A if they had to, but that is not the way of UIL.

There are no (or few) apartment complexes for the less affluent people to move to in Lorena. China Spring and Midway have many apartments. That has helped spur the growth in the district as everyone flees Waco ISD.

Lorena had a big problem in that their sewer system wasn't big enough to handle growth, so there was a moratorium on building out there the last few years. Now that the Bull Hide Creek sewer plant it open, Lorena should boom again in the next few years.

I remember when all the coaches at Robinson were so afraid of going to 4A in the early and mid 90s, but now that the cut off keeps rising
I think Robinson might be 3A forever.

Does Robinson still have a great Marching Band program? They always owned Class 3A with a band that was bigger and better than most 4A bands.

Robinson's band is still alive and kicking. I saw them last year and they made it to state. Had to be 200 kids in the band. Pretty amazing to think from a 3A school.
