someone told me today that whs is on stage 5 of being unacceptable and if they are unable to meet standard next year, the state will take over the campus and essentially fire everyone.

if this is true, not too surprising, wisd is quickly dying.

Not sure, but looking at the state rating website, Waco High is Academically Unacceptable and does not qualify in 12 of the 15 categories.

There is a reason why the City of Waco is losing population while the suburbs grow.

Edit - link doesn't work.

In simple terms there are two ratings systems for Texas schools. The one mentioned above my post is the state rating.

The mention of stage four or five is the federal rating for not making Annual Yearly Progress. It is possible for schools that are fine in one system to have trouble in the other, or for schools to be weak in both areas.

The link takes you to the mandatory actions for the stage for not making ayp, and the next step for Waco high is grim, but not necessarily closure.

Schools are judged by how their WORST subpopulation does on testing under the current system.

Waco High is hurting because of low test scores from African American students in math and science.

I know from my last workshop at the TEA regional service center that they are having teachers at that school attend evening extra training sessions on how to teach content to struggling or to non readers.

It is bad when you don't make state ratings, but even worse when a school fails to make ayp for several years in a row.

Interesting observation - on that list of schools in Title I Improvement, there are a few well known old football powerhouses from the 80s who are all Stage 5 in MATH - Dallas Carter, Dallas Bryan Adams, Houston Yates, etc.

80s Texas HS football is fresh on my mind because I watched a show on ESPN Classic last night about the SMU Football Program. Very interesting.
