My brother used to have one near where he lives in Fort Worth. They sell no-brand food for really cheap. Should do well in that location.

Well, "food" and "cheap" are 2 of my favorite things, so....

There's one going in on valley mills drive in Waco too. They say they have a small staff to help offset some of the cost as well..... Time will tell

Owned by the same Euro-group as Trader Joes. Most of their stuff is private label, but instead of calling it "Aldi Brand", like "Kroger Brand", "Walmart Brand", etc., they have made up company names. I think it has taken consumers a while to warm up to that, but now folks are realizing "hey, this is just as good as Kroger Brand".

It will be interesting to see if they can compete in HEB-land though. Centex doesn't need a low cost alternative to Walmart.

Maybe not by itself, but low cost, smaller store, and a less overall miserable shopping experience may attract some customers

True. Aldi definitely takes the "long view" with their stores and gives them a LOT of time to make inroads in the market. Very different (and refreshing) from US chains that are publicly owned and subject to the whelms of Wall Street analysts.

More competition is always a good thing.

Hate to break it to you but the unpleasant WallyWorld experience comes from it's clientèle and the Waco-Aldi location will be swarming with that clientèle

Today my daughter said we always went out to eat on payday and then to SackNSave but the kids had to use the bathroom at the restaurant because I wouldn't take them into SNS's! The one time she absolutely HAD to be taken into SNS's there were curse words written on the walls in Easy Cheese. Saving money 30 years ago was our goal....the kids are out of college and I will check Aldi out but it will have to impress me greatly.

If I remember you have to pay deposit on shopping carts and must bring your own bags or pay for bags. It's been several years since I have been in one this may have changed. No frills, but cheap prices.

Aldi is a major grocer in Germany (perhaps more of Europe as well), but as others have said, they have low prices by having a small staff and few frills. From my understanding, they actually take care of their customers.

I know they recently opened an Aldi in the Frisco area that's slightly more affluent, and it seems to do pretty well.

But that being said, they do require a deposit for the shopping baskets to prevent them being lost/stolen. Baskets run about $250 each as of a couple years ago. And bags cost the store about $.05 each. Not much until you think about how many bags are used/thrown away each day.

Oh the days of working at a grocery store
