Haven't been in awhile. Drove by the other day and it is GONE.

Did it close recently?

Don't know. Noticed it was closed a couple of months ago. No sign on the door or anything.

The owners may be getting up there in age. That place goes WAY back into the early 80s at least..

It seemed like the son was running things for a while but the sister was BSC and employees had a hard time with her.

Always sweet to customers but I heard she chased a cook out of the kitchen with a knife one time.

It's been closed for a while now. The daughter is BSC and neither kid was capable of running things.

Before I proceed out of respect I asked a friend who would know thru another friend that worked for the Lee's for years that Mr. Lee has Alzheimer's. That's supposedly why they closed. That said, they never trusted anybody with the money and especially the daughter. She always made me uncomfortable, I felt like she was hitting on me and I'm a girl.

I was sad to see it close as well. Mr. and Mrs. Lee were great hosts. The daughter on the other hand was very uncomfortable to be around. She would want to shake everyone's hand (which doesn't seem sanitary in a dining setting) and would hover at the table for far too long.

Is there anywhere good in particular?

Ugh. Not really. The Thai place in Temple is OK, but I'm not a big fan of it.

There is a new Asian place going in at the old Baytown Seafood near the HEB shopping center.

The Chinese place on Sparta across from Walmart is decent Chinese food with a decent buffet. There is a sushi chef there, too.

Dynasty is the massive go-to Temple fixture for Chinese food. They also have a big buffet.

Saigon-something over by Cactus Jacks is popular. Their food is very fresh but I find it somewhat bland. Others like it a lot.

IMO, if you want decent Asian or Asian American, you have to go to Killeen. There are 4 or 5 decent thai places over there, there is a very good Vietnamese place (Chau's) on FT hood street near Omart, and another on Rancier (Pho-something) Korean Kitchen on VetMem is awesome. There is a Hawaiian place on Rancier that's pretty good for lunch. Sushi places all over town.

Chains: There's Ghengis BBQ in heights, and a new noodle & co. in Killeen that are good American-Asian places.

The Red Onion is an Indian Cafe in Killeen with a great buffet. Not spicy enough for me though.

VS Indian is a little hole-in-the-wall Indian grocer and cafe in the "Big Lots" shopping center in Temple. Mom&Pop owners are very nice. The restaurant only has 3 tables but the food is homemade from scratch daily and is quite good - and spicy if you ask them to make it that way.

I eat there at least once a week. Tham Rab Thai in Killeen is my favorite Thai in the area.

Sorry to hear about house of lee. I went to school with the son, he was a good dude, pretty sharp too. Loved that place, wonder what happened to the plastic chandeliers?

Is it consistently good? I've only been 2-3 times. I went when it first opened and didn't care for it. I think that first cook is no longer there. The last couple of times I went, I think the owner cooked and it was pretty damn awesome...

Saigon Cafe is good and fresh, but it's not a buffet if that's what you're looking for

It depends on what you want out of "Asian" cuisine.

Here are my rankings:

SUSHI
1. Shogun - Harker Heights (Indian Trail Pl) - hands down the BEST sushi in the area...it is outstanding. Handrolls......omg.....so amazing.
2. Sakura - Temple - Big Lots shopping center - not as good as Shogun, but they have this wonderful "monkey brain" dish that is.....so good. Their sushi is great. Their handrolls are their weakness, and I'm a big handroll person.
3. Temple Nami - I really dislike the one in Belton. Not a huge Nami fan, altogether, though.

CHINESE
1. Meh...it's Chinese. It's like Mexican food....it's hard to differentiate between places, but for arguments sake I'll say Saigon. If not Saigon, I'll go to Dynasty before Yank Sing (which I think is awful).

VIETNAMESE
1. Saigon is good. I don't think it's as good as Pho John in College Station, but it also has Malaysian, which is good.

THAI
1. Taste of Thai is ok....(I have the owners daughter in my class, so I'll be nice). I'm sure there are better places in Killeen.

INDIAN
1. If you love Indian food, PLEASE do yourself a favor and go to Killeen to this restaurant on 190. It is AWESOME. Some of the best Indian I've ever had

We are empty nesters. We eat out a lot.

jan,

The Indian place on 190 is Red Onion, and and it is very good. Excellent buffet during lunch - fresh bread, salads, meat dishes, etc...

Try VS when you get a chance.

I recommend Chau Vietnamese on Ft. Hood Street and 190 down the sidewalk from OMart.

And Also Korean kitchen on Vet Mem in Killeen. Don't know if youve ever had Korean before, but it is a little different. Get the Bulgogi/Rice. The Spicy Bulgogi/Rice is even better. If its just two of you, I recommend getting one Bulgogi order with extra meat. It comes with about 8-10 KimChee sides and is probably enough for two. They'll refill a KimChee side or two of you ask.

I agree with you on Chinese, or at least what Chinese food has become in small town USA. Siagon is definitely the closest thing we have in town to "upscale" Chinese Cuisine. There's a decent Chinese place in heights off 190 that's pretty good. Not sure of the name. Probably some others in West county that I don't know about.

As for Thai, honestly, the places in Killeen are mostly good but not great. There's 2 places in Cove that I actually like better. One's in the cove terrace, and the other is in that last shopping center on your right before you leave town going to Lampasas.

Will try that sushi place. Sounds great!

surprise, Jan doesn't like something in Belton.

I kid... I kid.

in all seriousness... we just don't go for Asian very often. I love it, but we just don't think about it very often. And i usually don't go past Market Heights in HH to know what else is there besides Panda Express.

Ha ha, you wouldn't be wrong on that USUALLY, but in the case of sushi???????? Nah, I'll go to the best. I don't care what part of Bell County it is in. That's how much I love sushi.

Maybe it's the building/atmosphere, or maybe it's the one or two experiences I had at the Belton Nami, but I just don't like it as much. To be fair, I only go to Nami if I'm with someone other than my husband. They all think it's great. I think it's "ok".

I prefer the Temple one as well to be honest. But I think I've been a grand total of 3 times between them in 5 years.

on a related note.... We finally sold our house in San Angelo 5 years later. so I'm now glued to Bell County.
