The Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team (VET) was activated early this morning to deploy to West, Texas, in response to last night’s fertilizer plant explosion. VET will provide care for search and rescue animals of Texas Task Force 1 and other teams with K9 units, as well as for pets and domestic animals injured or affected by the blast.

The team will triage animals and has the space and equipment to be able to perform surgeries and treat pretty much any type of injury they will see at the site. The team has a full pharmacy and supplies available for their use as well as a decontamination unit to treat animals who were exposed to the chemicals from the plant explosion.

The mission of the team is to provide veterinary medical support for animals in disaster situations. The team also educates and trains veterinary students by offering elective courses in emergency response and management within the first three years of the veterinary curriculum.

The Texas A&M Foundation is a nonprofit organization that receives major gifts and manages endowments for the benefit of Texas A&M University. This year, the Foundation will provide $70 million to Texas A&M for scholarships, faculty support, leadership programs and construction projects. Request your A&M Support Kit to learn how you can make a difference at Texas A&M through a gift to the Foundation.

It seems many had pets run off after the explosion and can't get back to their homes to find their pets. I'm going to donate pet food at the Sparta rd fire dept. I've already sent money to the local fund.
