seriously, I don't think I've bought anything in the mall other than a pretzel or movie ticket in 3 years. just nothing going in there that I want. It's a dying place at this point.

Ah. Yeah.. I feel your pain.

I really think they should open a bar in every mall, or a cigar shop.... The rib can go waste money on junk, I can relax with a nice scotch/beer and a cigar and read a magazine or watch sportscenter....

You'd think wuth all these Crossfit, Titan Training, 24 Hour fitness, etc places around here and all the people constantly posting about these color runs on Facebook it wouldn't be so bad. Guess everyone else is lazy and likes a good meal a little too much just like me.

For what it's worth, so do the bars. My cousin opened at one in downtown temple last night and the cover was $15, but he managed to get me in for $5. Good deal because I was only there to see him. A beer was $4, and that's fine because that's what schoepf's charges, of course there's no cover charge at schoepf's. It's free to see good bands. After one beer I asked the girl at the bar for a water. She flashed 2 fingers at me, and I said I just want 1 water. She said it's $2 for bottled water. I said just give me an ice water out of the tap. They can't do that there, only bottled water. I'm all for making money but really. A month ago he played there and a waitress asked for my ID. I wasn't flattered. Smart service goes a long way. Good service goes further. rant over.

this area is lacking in good service in restaurants across the board. mind blowing.

Schoepfs doesn't charge cover because the Chamber subsidizes the cost of the band

As for everything else, $4 beer isn't unusual. I paid $4.50 at BJs the other day, and the service was fine...

So if the only issue is 2 bucks for a bottle of water, I mean, there are worse things...

cjags,
Its not just here. Service is overall not as good in smaller towns. We don't have the labor pool that a Houston or Dallas has...

Didn't know that about the chamber. No, $4 beer isn't unusual but I bet if you asked for a water at BJ's it would have been free from the tap. This bar does serve food. Even an ice water from Starbucks is free. Not a bottled water, but you have a choice. There are other issues I have with locally owned bars and restaurants but this isn't Austin and they don't have very much competition.

I don't think service has to do with the local labor pool. I think people just don't get trained properly and waiters that get hired just don't care.

I do think it has to do with the labor pool. There is not something uniquely bad about Central Texas workers that other places of similar demographics do not experience.

But, if that's the case, then the market will take care of it. If people go to a place despite bad product and bad service, shame on them...

I have had good and bad service in Central Texas, just like I have had good and bad service in other places. There's nothing worse here than other similarly situated places...

Schoepfs is terrible.
I've never understood why people rave about it.

The service in this town is horrible.

My favorite sushi place here (Cactus Jacks....seriously, Joon the chef is amazing ) had not one server show up on a Friday night. He said he can't get anyone who wants a job to actually work.

I find this hard to believe. I asked a friend who used to introduce the bands. He said he didn't think so but he's not in the know. Ronnie has a lot of sponsors and if you have a reserved table for the season it's $500. What incentive does the chamber have? It's not as if it brings in tourism money.

It's what I was told. Maybe it was the city (which i doubt) But I was told that Schoepf's doesn't pay the full cost of the band? And that it is subsidized.

If someone tells you differently, and they are correct, so be it....

I think the Texas free music series is sponsored. So, the table rentals, the chamber and others cover cost. I'll ask Ronnie next time we go. Now I'm curious.

Interesting, and thanks for the info.

That is consistent with what I was told -- that the costs are subsidized, covered, sponsored, whatever.

Same diff.

I was specifically told the cost of the band was subsidized, or covered. I didn't get a lot of detail about the full extent of the sponsorship, and I didn't ask...
