One of the styles I recommend to people looking to branch out is a hefeweizen or weissbier. One brewed in the Bavarian tradition is a must. Good examples are offered by Schneider & Sohn, Spaten (Franziskaner), Paulaner, Weihenstephaner, and Hacker Pschorr. The best American version comes from Live Oak out of Austin. No Label's (Houston) offering isn't bad, but it does appear filtered (not traditional). Widmer (Washington/Oregon) is widely distributed, but does not have the characteristic nose of bananas/cloves likely due to their yeast choice. I have a similar opinion of Shiner's hefeweizen. Not bad beers, just not as "Bavarian" as I'd like.
Schneider & Sohn focus on different weizen styles, and is my favorite brewer for most weizens. Although, Hacker Pschorr's dunkelweizen is top notch.
