Two men were the cement for the sports programs in this town for decades. DECADES. Not years. One will be laid to rest tomorrow. The gym carries his name. The other is aging also, and the field house has his name. I know that the Eagles have lost one of their biggest fans and mentors.

Coach Doggett was one of the greatest there ever was. He backed down from no one on the court.

Cooked a mean BBQ as well.

RIP

Even after he retired, he would go to every game for every sport at every level. There was a corner of the gym where he would sit, even for the seventh grade b team volleyball. As long as his health allowed he was always there. He also was in the teachers lounge frequently just checking on his school and his kids. He will be missed.

In the coaching profession in the Central Texas area we have called Coach Doggett the "Living Legend" for years now. I guess now he will simply be "The Legend". He was a great man and great coach but what many will not realize is how much he mentored young coaches simply by being himself and showing us the way to do things.

I was not able to attend the services. Some of us had to be at school today for exams. However, one of the coaches who did attend mentioned Coach Godwin talking about the early days for the two of them, when three men coached every sport at every grade level for the boys and girls, and usually had a full teaching load also.

It made me remember my high school days when that was the case. A coach and frequently a single assistant coached the junior high, the JV if you had one, and the varsity for football. Girls sports at all grade levels were coached by a single person, who was the "scouting" coach for the football team, going to away games on Friday night to look at next weeks team. No game film or huddle back then.

I know coaching is still a tough job, but nothing at all as tough as it was in the 60's and 70's. Rest in peace.
