I'm pretty sure the overheating issues are on heavily tracked cars. You could always get a Z51 stop gap until the mid engine Z06 is released!

I was trying to get a GT350 through military auto source, but my rep was essentially useless. As a backup plan I'm getting the Mrs a new Wrangler. I'll probably realist the E55 to appease the Mrs, but doubt I'll actually be able to get rid of her.

Also if you end up with ANY vette, couple that purchase with HPDE. At that point you'll be better equipped to handle the car than 90% of other owners.
I'd get a loaded base model.

If you are in a particular position to buy the new Z06 and can appreciate and use its capabilities, I can't see how you would regret doing so.
Id say there is no way you can approach the performance limits of a base much less the zo6

I have also never bought a truck in my life that I had similar regrets. As such, I cannot fathom how one would regret a Z06, or Shelby, or ANYTHING that is faster than the base model.

Maturity and ability would play a large role in what's appropriate. I don't know much about the traction and stability control in these cars, so it might not matter because the car will save you from yourself.

The Z06 is a lot of car for an experienced driver. I wouldn't suggest not buying it, rather I would suggest learning to respect it by taking it out to an HPDE event (or two, three, four, ...). That's the only way you're going to see what it can do, anyhow.

The Stingray does 0-60 in 3.7s. The Z06 does it in 2.95s, but costs 50% more.
I'd rather spend the 30k on an extra vehicle and have a boring old base stingray. It's still a 460hp car stock, even before you add K&N stickers.

I'm curious about the program.
So she gets a car for free, but you are contractually obligated to purchase a new car every 4 years? Do they require proof? What happens if you don't buy a new car? Does her car from GM get repossessed or does she have to pay a penalty?

I've had three Corvettes in the last ten years. The closest I've come to a Z06, which has always been a little out of my price range, is the '11 Grand Sport I'm driving now. It has all the bells and whistles of the Z06 but has the base engine. I would sacrifice certain body parts to have a new Z06.
