Is anyone using these that goes offroad alot and thru brush/weeds, etc? Thinking of putting them on some vehicles now but worry about it being snagged underneath.

The drain lever is retained by a plastic clip where once removed you have to push down and rotate to open the valve. Yes it sticks out a bit further than a normal plug but nothing id worry about off road.

I have one on a F150 that's a combo DD, ranch truck, and out west hunting truck.

It's never failed and I've never considered it a problem.

Through grass, dirt, low water crossings, mud, rocks hitting the skid plate, etc. The plastic clip has never come off, and the spring is always loaded in the lock position until I'm ready to change oil.

I have one on my 6.7 F250 that sees light off road and brush with no issues.

If you are worried about the valve being snagged, or the way these stick out further, take a look at the ValvoMax quick drain valves. Same principal but lower profile because there is no handle on the ball valve, the ball is spring loaded and you insert a "keyed" fitting to overcome the spring load and start it draining. Have one on a 3.6 Pentastar and it is the easiest oil change ever due to the cartridge filter being up top. Valve has been installed for 3 years and 45k miles and there has never been a drop leaked.

Stahlbus is a similar valve that I have used but I had a Stahlbus leak a few drops past the ball into the sealed cap every 3k miles on one car so I stopped using that brand.

I ended up putting them on several trucks. I took them all back off since they didn't allow all of the oil to be drained from the pan. I guess I ended up not seeing the benefit of having them.

I guess I see the value in them as I have them on all my vehicles. 3 trucks, an SUV and the car.

How much oil gets left in the pan?

Not enough to likely matter, but enough to make me crazy.

I'd say about a cups worth, or maybe half a cup, in my application of diesel pickups. It's because the 'stem' of the valve sticks up in the pan but a little bit. So, the bigger the pan, the more oil is left. I only noticed when I removed the plug and oil came out after it was empty.

It's not likely enough to matter from a practical standpoint, but I change my oil in a pit in the pasture so it's not a huge deal to flick that drain plug on out into the drain pan.

Plus, I always had to fiddle with the tab to open the valve. My ADHD brain could never remember which way the tab goes to open, and with the safety spring and catch....it was always just a pain in the ass for me. It's just a lot easier for me to grab my 5/8" wrench and get on with it.

From a safety standpoint and concerns about 'accidentally opening' and destroying your engine...I'd say the odds of that are about zero. It's probably safer than the drain plug in that regard.

My ADHD ass loves them. Got one on every vehicle I own.

Fair points.

For those of us who aren't draining our oil into the pasture, I'll take the convenience of attaching the tubing and going right into a 5g bucket with lid. The 1/2 cup that remains is good to go for me

My 6.0 diesel takes 15 quarts of oil, I guarantee that there is far less than 1/2 cup of oil left in the tank when I change oil. I will accept a teaspoon or two.

Yeah. No way the valve leaves any more oil than having a plug.

Yeah…I'm not going to let your fears worry me in the least…

Not my fears. I have Fumoto valves on two of our vehicles. I'm question another poster's claim that it leaves a significant amount of oil in the pan using a Fumoto. I'm not seeing how that is possible.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

I had one but removed it because of the slower flow when draining. Won't this leave more sediment in the pan?

I think this could be a legit concern. I hadn't thought about that aspect.

The oil temperature when changing oil with a fumoto flip valve can be pretty hot which allows for an exceptionally increased rate of flow. I learned a long time ago never to change oil without adequate oil temperature. Nearly 4 gallons flowing at cold temps will take awhile. I've had the fumoto on my 2007 F350 since November of 2007. That's long enough for me to not have any worries about its perceived issues.

Re: a fumoto getting snagged by rocks, brush, debris, etc., my 4Runner (now my son's 4Runner) has skid plates so no worries there. If it didn't, I would have had some reservations and weighed the risk/reward. I always had to remove 1 skid plate to change the filter, but the valve kept me from having to remove a 2nd plate to drain the oil. Maybe the oil could be drained without removing the 2nd plate, but it was still a lot easier with the valve.

Installed Fumotos on my F250 and Expediton earlier this year. I'm anxious to get to the next oil change interval. No leaks at all on my vehicles. I plan to install them on our Tundra and NX200 later this year.
