I figured I would post a few pictures of my latest project, its a Four Wheel Camper that is made to replace the top on a "Big" Bronco. This particular camper was made for a 1978-79 Bronco but I am rebuilding it to fit a 1990 Bronco. I bought it out of Colorado last year on a trip on a whim as I thought it was cool but didn't have any plans for it. Here is the camper as purchased, not much there and a major project.

Once I got it back to Texas I realized that I did not have a Bronco to put it on! In true TexAgs fashion I had to buy a Bronco for the camper. I ended up finding a 1990 Bronco out of California from a friend of a friend. Here is a picture of it next to my 1967, this was the beginning of last year.

The real challenge now was to fit this old frame onto the newer body style of the Bronco. The first thing I had to do was learn how to tig weld aluminum so I could modify the frame. That was a slow process that I am still figuring out but I have gotten proficient enough to get the frame built.

I figured while I had the Bronco in the shop now would be a good time to go ahead and add some sound deadening inside the cab. All of the interior had to come out to do that.

With the interior back in I could focus on getting the frame built out on the body. I removed the top and here I am working on fitting the camper to the back end of the Bronco. The camper overhangs the back about 10" so the back end needs to be framed up. I am planning on boxing in the camper frame and sealing it to the body and hopefully use the existing tailgate seal to keep water/dust out. The tailgate will be removed as well once I get farther along. Most of these campers used particle board or plywood for the floor areas but I did not want any future rot or wood issues. I decided to use a composite fiberglass material called Thermo Lite board from Space Age Synthetics. This material is used a lot in the marine industry. I will also use this material in the overhang above the cab over bed area. Here are a few pictures as to where the project is currently at. I dont have much time to work on it so I fit it in where I can.

In the pictures above you can see the bulkhead where the camper and cab meet right behind the seats. I will be making a transition piece to go from the camper to cab, that will make a completely open area to pass through. There wont be much of that bulkhead left once the transition is done. The hard part is getting everything is seal and look good. Its been done before so I will figure it out.

I plan on going pretty minimal inside the camper but since we are in Texas I will be adding a small 5000but window unit as well as a cheap diesel heater. I still have to source new pop up fabric for the sides as well. The roof pops up approximately 30" when it is open. Here are a few pictures of a similar Bronco camper.

Very cool! Several company factory produced these. I've only seen one for sale over the last 10 years. Couldn't swing buying it at the time. Wish I had.

I am using tig. I really wanted to go the mig route but the tubing is 1/16 to 1/8" thick so tig was the best option. It is definitely slower than any other process I have learned to do.

Yep, I need to practice it too. I don't have the right type of Tig welder right now though, can only do steel.

The cab over area will have a full bed that can extend to a king and I am thinking I want to add a twin bed on the passenger side. I will make the bottoms bed removable though.

Yes the red one has a 4BT in it.

I thought that was it. I met you a few years ago fueling up at University/Hwy 6. I remember seeing that green fuel filler nozzle hanging out of it and told my son "let's go over and check this out, something special happening here". You gave us the tour, many thanks.

Very cool man.

The one you turned me onto way out west ended up being in very poor shape from the way they stored it. So I ended up scrapping it. I did save the transition piece that connects the cab to the camper. If you want it, let me know. I also have a big side glass for it.

Yes. I will swing by and pick it up next week. I am not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot.

We moved to Georgetown last year, but I'll bring it next time I am in town. If you need it sooner, I can meet you half way.

So update on the camper........sorry it has taken so long. I have the frame finished and all of the panels attached. I used a SIKA product to adhere the fiberglass panels to the aluminum frame. This material is the same stuff they use to attach aluminum panels to 18 wheeler trailers. My original intention was to build my own bulkhead attachment to the camper/Bronco out of steel. Once built I realized it would not work and would be a nightmare to get it to seal up properly. I scrapped my initial idea and bought a stock Bronco top and cut it up to fit my needs and it is working out perfectly. I can now use the factory attachment points and I am hoping to use factory seals as well. The exterior siding is installed and now I just need to trim it out. It seems that anything related to an RV is made very cheaply so I plan on using some 1/8" aluminum angle for the trim that will be screwed and sealed to the frame. My last big hurdle is getting the the pop up fabric sewn up, I have found a company in California the specializes in this type of upholstery. Here is a photo dump of pictures over the past few months. My progress on the camper is getting ready so slow to a crawl since the next few months will be a busy time for work.

On a side note if anyone is local to BCS that is good at automotive painting hit me up! I need to get my roof painted on the Bronco before I install the camper as it is in pretty rough shape. The roof is the worst area since this was an Arizona Bronco.

Initial build-out of the bulkhead out of steel. This was a bad idea and ended up going into the scrap pile.

Revised bulkhead design using a cut up top from a Bronco. This works perfectly with some modifications, since its made of fiberglass it was a breeze to get the lines to fit correctly and mate up to the fiberglass panel on the camper.

Fitting the siding on the camper

Siding installed and riveted to the frame, all of the rivets will be covered with trim.

Profile of the siding I had custom made out of a shop in Colorado.

Here is my obligatory pick of my 2023 Bronco, its not white but it has an Ecoboost! I f your in the market for a Ford hit up reproag on the forum he can hook you up.

Finally I have some time to get back on the camper. Here are a few pictures of the interior paneling going in. I need to get the door permanently installed with sealant and screws before the paneling goes in around it, but I am waiting for a few warmer days to do that.

The camper is finally mounted! I have been working on it in my spare time which is not much. I am at the point where I am finishing up the wiring and adding my solar system. The interior cushions are at the upholstery shop now getting covers made.

That thing is awesome. I inherited a high top van from my dad and built out a pretty crude, half-assed camper that was probably 1% as difficult as this. When you're not dealing with flat surfaces or right angles and have to custom make everything, it takes ten times longer than you think it will.
