So I'm not a truck guy previously but I'm thinking about getting one and was wondering Texags opinions. I'm normally a Toyota guy but Tundras are more expensive and looking around at reviews and ratings it seems like recent RAM trucks are actually pretty well regarded compared to other brands right now. They are also more budget friendly than a tundra. Does anyone have any strong opinions for or against a RAM truck? Also does 1500 classic vs 1500 matter?

Would likely be getting a used 2022 or 2023 at some point next year so looking at those years in particular for the best bang for my buck. I don't really care about interior gadgets or anything fancy. Fords seem to be pricier than RAM as well and I don't really have an interest in Chevy.

Looking to decide if an extra 10k for a tundra is really worth it for ride and reliability if they aren't even rated higher on reliability these days.

Each brand has issues as they have implemented changes to meet fuel economy standards. For reliability, get the previous generation Tundra with the 5.7. Outside of that, get what you like and can afford.

The current Ram is a mature design right now and probably won't give you too many issues despite what is said here. Ram is offering the best discounts currently as well due to low demand. You can easily find $15K off of MSRP on Laramie and up trims. The Ram interior on Laramie & up is incredible as well and I think the most luxurious of all brands (I have an F150 & Expedition so no bias toward Ram).

I like the new Tundra interior but the exterior is just hideous and I can't get past it yet. Maybe I'll get used to it though. I hated the 2007 Tundra redesign when it came out but then owned one for 13 years and 230K and it was my favorite truck I've owned so far.

If you are "looking around" at used versions of each, the Tundra is going to be expensive because (historically) they hold their values very well. Ram not so much.

Even used tundras are 6-10k more than a lot of new rams are being advertised.

i test drove the Tundra. great power. but, holy hell the exterior plastic maybe the cheapest every put on a vehicle. the massive grills are amazingly flimsy.

If you color match the mustache on the grill and put the leveling kit on it, they actually look pretty sweet. But agree, the pure stock look was a little bit of let down.

This - hate the mustache so I used the below on my '23 Limited TRD to delete the chrome mustache and rear bumper. Looks great now and drives much better than my '14 Tundra with the 5.7 V8. The twin turbo V6 is all around better than the old V8.

The Rams will be redesigned next year and will not offer the hemis anymore. They will have the hurricane v6. If you want new and a v8, 2023 is your last chance with Ram.

Trying not to be nitpicky but the Hurricane is an I6, and 2024 Rams have the Hemi 5.7 available, there's about 60 on the lot at my local dealer.

I love turbos, but it will be a sad day when you can't buy a new naturally aspirated V8 truck any longer.

Rams are cheaper because they break more. Engine will be fine, but a door will start squeaking within 3 yrs, a window switch is gonna go out, etc. Little pesky things will need repair. It's part of the dodge value proposition ... lower buy in, but with additional maintenance. The toyota costs more new and used because they engineer the gripes out of their vehicles. They just work, for a long time. Always have and people are willing to spend more on used toyotas because history shows they will have fewer problems.

That hasn't been my experience at all with my 2019 Ram 2500. It has been extremely solid and has fewer issues than the Duramax it replaced. No issues with window switches, squeaks, rattles, fires, or really anything outside of a wheel bearing. Would buy again. GL with your choice.

How long doyou plan to keep the truck ?

How many miles a year do you drive ?

The dodge is cheaper for a reason

Usually 10000 miles or less a year, keeping 10 years at least.

Between the Tundra and the RAM, get the Tundra.

Since you're not a truck guy and it may not be on your radar, I'm going to suggest you take a look at the Nissan Titan. It's by far the most reliable truck you can buy new and Nissan is offering big discounts and 0% financing right now. You can get an SV under $40k and a fully optioned Pro-4X for around $50k. There's no voodoo witchcraft fuel economy tricks like cylinder deactivation or auto engine stop/start and the only engine option is the 5.6L V8 that Nissan's been making for years. It's the last old-school truck but has all the creature comforts one would expect to be available in the cab.

If you haven't considered it, the Titan is worth a look.

You guys think the Ram is going to cost $10,000 more to maintain than the Tundra? That is a huge number. I posted this earlier this week, but for minivans you will pay $13k more for a Toyota vs a Dodge. I've had 3 Dodge vans and I can tell you without a doubt that the premium to get a Toyota will not be recovered in maintenance costs. Over the life of 3 minivans and a total of 850,000 miles I haven't spent $13k on maintenance total.

The premium in Honda and Toyota is not there because the market knows something. It's there because people are emotional and the perception that Japanese is better is enough to inflate the prices above what it should be on a purely economic basis.

I wanted the most reliable pickup possible as well. Went with the 5.7 tundra, and couldn't be happier.

You put 850k on 3 dodge minivans and never had any major issues ?

Also keep depreciation in mind on this deal

Go price dodge versus toyota on 10 year old models

I bought a 2013 tundra for 29k drive out
A Truck like that is still selling for 13-15k all day long.

My experience with dodge was bad. Paid on the truck for 28 months. In that 28 months I also spent around $2800 in repairs. This was a 3 year old dodge that had 37k on it when I bought it. I bought a new Tacoma after that Tundras ever since and enjoy the reliability and higher resale value.

My dodge truck went through wheel bearings like aTm does football coaches.

What year is your truck?

I had 2 failures with under 70k on the truck
I know this was very problematic on older rams but is it still common on newer ones ?

So you paid too much for them and kept them installed even when the wheels had come off?

I'm in a Ram now… came from a 5.7 Tundra. My Tundra was an awesome truck. Loved it. No problems ever. I don't know much about the new Tundra power plant options but if you can find a low mileage 5.7 that would be my vote. That said- my Ram is a '22 TRX and it's just plain fun. Interior is gorgeous. But she's a thirsty one…

I second the Titan. You can get a great deal on a Pro 4x with lots of standard features and you'll have a 5 year, 100k warranty.

2019 Ram 1500 Limited here with 111k miles.

Not a squeak, rattle, nothing.

Trouble free.

Best vehicle I've ever owned.

I hate the way Tundras look. Sorry Toyota folks.

My experience with Dodge has not been good. I owned a Dodge minivan and it was garbage. No power at all. Dealer would not fix it. But it's been a while since I owned Dodge.

My son had a Dodge Neon. Garbage. Water would get inside the car during heavy rains but we had no idea where it was coming from. The motor mounts also went bad and it was not that old. I've never had motor mounts go bad on any other vehicle. That was a few years back.

Good luck op. Whatever you decide on, do not take it off the lot with a problem. If it feels or behaves even a little off, abort. Find another one. Keep driving them until you get one that you are completely comfortable with. The dealers will not fix it in my experience.

No offense taken by this tundra guy! Never thought they were particularly good looking, but the 5.7s are some of the best trucks ever put on the road.

I still love my '16 TRD Pro. Mag gray, predator steps, larger KO2 tires. Still a badass looking truck to my eyes. Super charged it almost two years ago and fell in love all over again. Just yesterday I dropped the windows to hear the rumble. To delivery in January of 2016 and only has 70k now. Not even broken in yet

Been looking at Trucks myself too and seems like they all have one issue or another.

The Toyota's I know are rock solid, but heavens the interiors on the last gen trucks are just terribly dated. Even the 2021 model display screen is just pathetic. What year did they finally add Car Play/Android Auto? 2020?

A good friend is a shop foreman for a Lexus dealer and been working on Toyota/Lexus cars for 30-years. Says they do more oil changes, tire rotations and routine service than anything else. Almost never do major repairs b/c the cars/trucks just run forever.

He does drive an F150 though!
