I have what appears to be some sort of felt undercarriage thing that's falling off of my truck. What is the purpose of this thing, should I just take the whole damn thing off? Not sure why it's felt and not a metal plate there.

It covers your oil pan if memory serves. I definitely have to take it off to change the oil. I've always been kinda bothered by it and contemplated buying a metal one to replace it but I'm not bothered enough to spend $200-300 on it.

It's to prevent dirt and mud from getting on the undercarriage. You can remove it.

I had one of those on my old f150 that would fall off every time I drove through the pasture. I finally just threw it away.

It's there to catch oil leaks for a while. Just kidding. My Expy has one. Mostly it is annoying but it does keep the transmission a bit cleaner.

It's pretty much useless. I replaced mine with the factory Raptor skid plate. Solid plate and covers the cats; super easy 30 minute install and all-in about $120. And unlike that felt garbage, it doesn't have to be removed for oil changes either.

There's a lengthy thread on the gen14 forum if you are interested.

Thanks for the link. Looks like I need to order one of those covers. Blows my mind that they don't put that on at the factory as part of the fx4 package. Assuming the install is relatively straightforward?

Super easy. You can reuse the bolts and clip nuts from the felt piece in the front, and then you need two extra bolts for the rear.

Also, Ford parts is super weird but I would check at least a few dealers before ordering. I'm in Central Texas and it was nearly double the price of a dealer in South Texas, and shipping was wildly different as well. That thread has all the part numbers and such.

This is great, thanks again. Reading through the thread there seems to be back and forth about the oil valve door and its necessity. Did you get that as well? Does it make changing the oil any more of a pain in the ass?

I did not get the small oil door. Just didn't seem worth it to me. I have the 3.5 PB so the oil filter is a bit of a pain but this plate doesn't make that any more difficult.

Keeps things clean, and you can tell when someone doesn't reinstall it correctly because you can see it flapping underneath the vehicle as they drive down the highway.

This is an actual thing? Probably a $1000 hard core off road option too am I right?

Do those part numbers work for the power boosts as well?

I installed the following on my 21 PB:

HL3Z-7222-E
W716831-S439 (x2)
W719490-S439 (x2)

You might need a couple more bolts or clip nuts if you don't have the felt diaper. Seems that 21 and 22's are all over the place as to what actually shipped from the factory due to supply chain crisis.

The linked thread has lots of pictures and various work arounds for the tiny clearance issue you will have. I just used an extra couple of washers as a spacer.

Also, as I mentioned above definitely search a few different dealers at fordparts.com. The dealer 5 miles from the house had similar prices 1ags lists above. The dealer in Alice TX was 35% cheaper. And it literally showed up on my front porch. 15 hours later.

Perfect!

I lost mine somewhere along River Road in Big Bend. And don't want a super expensive replacement.

Is there a version that fits Expedition/Navigator? I'm about to install a Fumoto and don't want to have to jack with the felt cover for future changes.

Yup. Fits. At least 18-21. I haven't added it to our new one yet.
