My 2014 Tundra has been replaced as my DD and I'm wondering what I need to do to keep it running well. Runs like new still and I am thinking about keeping it until my daughter is driving in a year.

How often and how long do I need to drive it in order to keep it in top shape? Anything else to consider?

Just run an errand in it once or twice a week and it will be fine. I change the oil annually in our '06 Jeep which only gets driven about 1,500 miles/yr.

More importantly where's your rule #1 post on the new ride?

My 4runner is in this same position. I drive it once-twice a week for an errand. Basically get engine, trans temps up to operating range for a while. Drive long enough to get gear oil warm.

All the above.

I try to drive my '04 wrangler and my '67 Firebird once a week to keep batteries charged up. This usually ends up being on the weekends.

Thanks y'all! I also had to keep the Tundra so I could at least argue my claim to keeping my man card.

I kept a garage queen for 14 years and drove it 35,000 miles. It was notorious for battery drain. Had a trickle charger on it for about 12 years.

I just acquired a 3rd spare. I have a problem. When are the group meetings again?

You guys are gung ho. I figure driving once a month is enough. Trickle charger, keep gas tank full, maybe use ethanol free gas if you live in a humid area, or at least use sta-bil.

When you do drive it, run long enough to get all fluids warm. Keep it clean, wash it every month if you need to.

N/M. Probably dumb question.

My batter is in the trunk so I'm going to have remove plastic and casing to use one of these. Dumb.

Some trickle chargers run through the cigarette lighter. Or pop the hood, you'll likely find (+) and (-) studs that connect to battery.

We drive our seasonal vehicles once every couple of weeks, then park for the winter, start them and warm them up once every 3-4 weeks. Has worked fine for us for a while.

3rd vehicle is definitely handy, especially since my DD is a 2020 Jeep Wrangler that has averaged 1 month in the shop per year of ownership.

Main hangup with the 3rd vehicle is keeping the battery charged.

Also, if you're only going to be driving it less than 2,000 miles/yr, look at changing the insurance.

The collector car insurance policy on my 20+ year old 3rd vehicle is super cheap.

I have multiple vehicles that sit up as I shift locations during the year and don't live in my pilot domicile.

For my cars that sit at a couple of different airports, I have solar maintainers hooked to the battery, my Jeep in the garage in CO, is in a maintainer when I'm gone for months at a time. My FL car sits in the garage with no help, but gets run every week or so.

I've found the key with newer generation cars with remote fobs is to keep a trickle charge on them to combat the battery parasitic draw. In my plane, I have an oil additive on top of that to keep some lubricants on the camshaft, which is higher in the engine.

Mechanical stuff doesn't like to sit, so if you must, let it sit, prep is key.

If you ever want to get rid of it, I am looking for one in that range.

Don't forget to pile a bunch of **** in the bed while it's in the garage so it's a complete pain in the ass to drive it every few weeks.

I've had a 2009 F250 and a 2007 Ford Edge as "extra" vehicles for many years now, they get driven once every 3 months or so for 2-3 days straight and have had no issues.

Trickle charger NOT solar
Stabil in full gas tank
Oil/filter, wipers change annually, the latter EZ/cheaper if DIY
Tire pressure to door post specs twice/year + battery water level + wash/wax-rinse
Inspections about to become moot but pay license fees
Replace all rubber anywhere every 7 years, even if this is controversial
Shade: tarp, garage, cover
Drive: every 3 weeks
Avoid using the parking brake, use chocks instead if necessary
Peppermint oil/equal deters some varmints from making this "vacant house" a home
Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable

I've got a few collector cars. Some of them don't get driven much, maybe 500-600 miles a year. It makes me sad. But I don't do much special and they always run great. Trickle charger, try and drive them once a month or at least every other month. Put at least 50 miles on them when driven. When driving, the goal is to get AS MUCH fuel through it as possible. Fresh gas often. I do run Star Tron and MMO mix in them now, but that's recent and never had an issue before without it. Change the oil once a year. Ummmm. That's really about it.

^^^This. And if they're parked outside, I keep the hoods open. I've had the best luck keeping rodents out of the engine bay doing this.

OP - not sure who your insurance is, but USAA and some others let you put secondary cars in "storage" while keeping full coverage. Suspends the collision coverage and helps keeps rates lower. Might look into this with your insurance CO. USAA usually reduces the premium 80-90%. You just have to give them XX days notice before driving the car.

Might also reach out to Hagerty to see whether they will cover you. I got them to add my X5 and F250 to my policy even though those aren't normally vehicles Hagerty would insure. Keeps the rates down for stuff that mostly sits. No mileage limitations. Just requires you to have a DD with another insurer.

I have 2 vehicles like this. Keep them on trickle chargers and run them at least once a month.

As for insurance, one has only liability, and the other is considered a classic car by SF. Insurance on those 2 are pretty low.
