If you drive an efficient vehicle, you get taxed

Had to pay $68 for daughter's prius.

Wasn't sure if I posted this or not.

EV's in TX are charged $200 when renewing registration. I believe that just started this year. I didn't know about it until renewing my wife's Tesla last month. I'm not sure if there is some kind of charge for fuel efficient vehicles.

The extra fee makes sense to me, though. EV's use no gas, so the portion of gas cost that is supposed to be used for road maintenance isn't being collected from EV owners even though those vehicles use the roads.

Extra electric fees for distributors like Center Point.

This stuff is so dumb. Would be so easy to eliminate the gas tax and move to a consumption tax based on your year-over-year mileage between inspections.

The gas tax is literally a consumption tax. HTH. Use less gas bc you travel less, you pay less tax. Use less gas bc your vehicle is more efficient, you pay less tax. The mileage model would be great for EVs though.

You do know that inspections are ending for most of Texas this year?

Well, we do have a pay per use program too. Emovis device installed on your car that tracks where you go.

https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/taxes-fees/mileage-choice

Quote:

  • Enroll: Before renewing your vehicle registration, create an account with Emovis. You will need your vehicle information and a valid credit or debit card to set up an account. Emovis will send you a device to place in your vehicle to report mileage.

    Enroll Now
  • Install the device: When you receive the mileage reporting device, follow the directions provided by Emovis to install the device in your vehicle and fully activate your account. You will also need to download a smartphone app to record an initial odometer reading.
  • Drive: The miles you drive will be recorded by the device, up to the amount of the highway use fee.

The vast majority of Texans will still need to have an inspection done.

The vast majority of geographic Texas will no longer require an inspection.

I think it was around $80 for the Prius in Bedford County, VA.

Dad ran a pickup on propane circa 1975. Texas required a $75/year tax sticker, to make up for road taxes not paid

    That's $435 in 2024 dollars.

    You are getting off cheap

I'm all for tracking for the folks that will still need the inspections. Kill the gas tax and go based on mileage from inspections.

They'd also need a formula based on vehicle weight.

its billed twice a year, though 80 isn't near as bad as what some city/counties charge.

We did that too. Never did quite figure out why it fell out of favor.
