Honda, Mazda, or Toyota

My wife's 2011 Subaru Outback is approaching 200k, and we're looking to get her a new car. After looking at a few cars, we've narrowed it down to the Honda CRV, Mazda CX-5/50, or a Toyota RAV4. I'm kinda leaning Honda, but don't know much about the Mazdas. As you can see from the Subaru, we tend to keep our cars several years, and try to take good care of them, so reliability is a big deal. Not looking at any of the hybrids, and probably no turbo either. Any preferences from the automotive forum?

I think those are all pretty good choices. I can see not wanting a turbo, but why not a hybrid version?

Of those, the Mazda. The Honda and Toyota are super boring. The new CX-5 and CX-50 are fun to drive and much nicer than the other two.

If this matters the CRV prob holds the most cargo with a lot of that being more vertical space over their competitors.

Other than that all 3 are good.

I'd prob lean the CX50 myself

If you don't want a turbo or a hybrid the CRV is out of the picture. As you get one or the other.

That Outback still has a lot of life left in it assuming you changed the oil regularly. Keep it another 5 years. My $.02.

You should drive the RAV4. Non-hybrid version is incredibly slow. It was crossed off my list after about 30 seconds behind the wheel

They have an Outback. They are probably used to slow.

Honda Odyssey has had a lot of issues. Mazda doesn't make a minivan. Toyota Sienna for the win.

Can't believe it took this long. AB falling down on the job.

And personally, I think all of the ones in the OP are pretty decent depending on what you want. I'd test drive each of them.

Mazda did make a minivan for a while called the Mazda 5. My parents had a 2014 Mazda 6 and it was really nice.

No love for the Toyota Previa?

It's mid-engined, rear wheel drive, supercharged. Basically a supercar.

I forgot about the old Previa. Still see a few of those out on the road with like 500k miles on 'em.

Not sure. My thoughts are that we generally drive our cars for over 10 years, and my thought is that the hybrids would start having battery or electrical issues more than a straight gas. Is that stinkin' thinkin'?

I think probably. I had a 2010 Prius from 2016 to 2021 and went from maybe 104k miles to 207k. It started burning oil at around 190k and this was a well known problem for that year. Otherwise I really didn't have any issues and no problems with the battery or the hybrid system.

I traded that in on a 2017 Prius in 2021. It had 75k miles when I bought it and now like 128k or somewhere in there. It has really been an awesome car with no problems. I've only done oil changes and the air filters on this. Probably should have the Toyota place look at it in the near future.

Toyota Hybrid battery warranty is 10 years or 150k miles
I'd get the Rav4 Hybrid, one of the best vehicles they make.

A much earlier minivan was the Mazda MPV, which came in 4WD. I still have my mom's 1990 MPV, and I hope to fix it up and get it back to running.

Strongly considering the new Mazda CX-70/90 myself.

Mazda's feel a little more high end and are way more fun to drive. If those things are important to you.

Good to know. If we go this direction I'll reach out for your contact. We used your guy for a Tundra in 2019 and had a great experience.

And Green2Maroon thanks for your insight on the hybrids. I'll do a little more research and driving.

I kept hearing how great the new CX platforms were and car & driver raved about the cx90, so I went to drive one.

I came away very disappointed. I found the transmission to be a little harsh at low speed. The suspension felt tight....lots of feedback over bumps. The screen was centered and smaller than I would have expected and without touch.

I want my family car to absorb bumps, feel smooth, and be safe. I don't care if it smokes a Highlander or CR-V on a race track.

I haven't driven or rode in one yet, but it seems to be that engine in the CR-V is incredibly undersized.

Fair, just not for you. I love the sportiness of my wife's CX-9

Seeing as she's driving a 2011, I take it that durability and reliability is at the top of the list. I'd go RAV4

The Honda CRV is reliable, efficient, and has better power than the RAV4.

Currently have a 2018 Honda pilot elite with 54k miles. Owned since new. It has not been a great ownership period. Just never a comfortable vehicle to drive, rough shifts in lower gears, multiple recalls (the auto start/stop fails to restart and the vehicle stalls and has taken up to a minute to restart, still fails after the recall "fix"), and the icing on the cake I'm currently dealing with is a bad camshaft that has to be replaced. The vehicle has been at the dealership for 3 weeks now as I have fought Honda America and the dealership for coverage on this (settled at ~50%). Even when talking to their head technician he said "Honda is not what it used to be". I plan to steer clear of Honda moving forward.

And the reason it's at the dealership for this repair is because the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and went into limp mode when driving. Was close enough to home so I could limp it home. Online research showed people were experiencing similar errors due to a fuel pump recall (which I knew about but Honda said they didn't have enough parts to replace yet) so I took it there thinking the issue was due to the recall.

I hated my wife's RAV4 (2022). Seats were uncomfortable and lots of road noise. I loved my Accord and now my Acura. Honda gets interiors right. I vote CRV, but never driven a Mazda so can weigh in on that one

Wife test drove all 3 of the OP's options in July and took each of them to her poor frontage road test bed she frequently drives. She immediately took the RAV 4 and Honda back to the lot disappointed about the road noise. I was along for the ride and concurred. She loves her new CX-5.

The newest CRV is pretty sharp looking. I would reconsider a hybrid. Toyota has been doing hybrid for 20-30 years now. I know nothing about Mazdas.
